Tyre Damage

Got out of the Jeep today glancing at the front tyre I noticed a split halfway through one of the outside lugs going in the direction of motion.
I'll get a pic in a while but never seen this before and wondered if it's ok or there's something bad gonna happen.
Not driven hard on the tyres just reasonably gentle greenlaning.

This actually goes down the back face of the lug into the carcass of the tyre...sec let me sort a camera and I'll take a shot.

I'd have a good look into the chasm (well the scale on your photo is a touch macro
), if it's not deep into the tyre and you can't see any metal then you should be ok. If in any doubt take it to a "friendly" tyre fitter and ask - problem being he might just suck his teeth and recommend replacement to get the work.

Shove a flat screwdriver in twist it, if you can see the wires it eventually will be fubar as the wires will rust and break. I have siliconed splits like that on my HGV to stop the water getting in and then run the tyre out with no probs, however if the wires showing it's illeagal.

Remember them landys only do 65 flat out and they do not go round corners very well, remember when buying a tyre the compound makes a diffrence. The more they say a tyre will do the more mediocre it will be.
Yes you are right ice tyres or dinner plates as we could them very narrow and soft compound they dig down to a hard surface to get their grip, they stud them abroad but not here, remember December 1.2.3 rally. GB.

Had a good poke and I can't see or feel anything in there other than rubber so going to pop it full of black silicon and keep a good eye on.
The two fronts will be replaced anyway in a couple of months so it only has to last till then.
