Timing Chain!!
« on: December 25, 2006, 09:40:17 PM »

Hi guys,

Long time no speak, hope you are all well and Xmas has been good for you all!!!

My wifes 99 TJ 4L has a lot of timing chain rattle come on over the past couple of months. Its done 58K miles and probably needs it changed.

How hard is it to change myself as ive never done a chain before. OR how much would it cost for a garage to do it?? rough price of course.

ThanksNick

Merry xmas :D

Jeez I wouldn't expect a timing chain to wear out after 58k.

What makes you think it's the chain?

very unusual for a 4.0 Jeep to need a timing chain.

Hi,
i changed my timing chain and sprockets tensioner 6 months ago , it started rattling all of a sudden!  one min it was fine next noisey.  i orderd new parts £160  and began to strip down, the old sprockets and chain where as good as the new ones,  the tensioner was knackerd.  as i'd bought everything i fitted them, problem solved.   this was on my 2.5 but i understand  the 6 pot is the same set up........ :)

LOL,  maybe you can get them cheaper,  the place i used was local and a ripoff!! but if you decide to strip it down go for just the tensioner and gasket.  the rattle is realy anoying on tickover thats what made me  open it up!!............cya
