if you have a receipt sayin sold as seen and they also have a copy of the receipt and you both signed them, then that is clear cut. depends if you want to give a refund or not really. you could always buy them a head gasket.

Sold as seen is sold as seen and as long as you made no claims as to the condition of the car ie saying it was being sold with no faults other than those specified at the time, then i cant see that the guy can have any reprise, unless he can prove you knew about it.Its a case of buyer beware and it was his choice to purchase and i would stand my ground as he has no right to a full refund if you gave him a receipt sold as seen as far as i can see

with the car i supplied heaps  (3 boxes full) of spares including complete top and bottom gasget kits, two oil filters complete spare engine   (although he hasn't taken this yet) brand new high lift jack and bonnet mount, lighting switches, sot top, full set of plugs, silicon leads dizzy cap. unfortunatly we both didn't sign receipts and he has only copy...although he would have to produce this to show how much he paid   ( i also gave all paperwork for car and £1800 of receipts spent on car in last 3 months... to him..) he has signed the log book as new owner... this was sent off thursday am.....

if he has the reciept of sold as recieved, (dont believe you can sell as seen anymore) that's it.  Normally you have a week to complain. i'm surprised it's taken this long to work out this conclusion. your word against his i'm afraid, you dont know what he has done in the days upto the complaint.
two products you could off for the person to try is K-SEAL and STEEL SEAL, both claim to temporary repair head gasket failures and cracks in the block. Their make up is a chemical with particles of copper. The whole contents is added to the water system and as it flows around the engine any part that is of a high temperature i.e a leak into the engine the copper bits melt and stick to the metal around the head and build up a temporary seal. this is "continously repaired" when the contents are left in the coolant. but remember if you change the coolant you will need top replace the chemical addititive.
I have know about this for over a year and it does work but if the coolant is refreshed and left the seal will fail.
K-SEAl retails at the £12.00 mark and the STEEL SEAL of a similar price. Remember this is a "temporary fix" but can last for some years.

sold as seen is sold as seen in my book
its the risk of buying private , if they wanted a waranty they should have brought from a dealer or had it checked over before they brought it
only my opinion that is

With Mort, bloke hasn't got a leg to stand on. However the only dodgy vehicles I've ever passed on have been to dealers, I've always been honest about any problems with my trucks or cars when selling to average Jo. What about taking it back and swapping in your spare engine.

i wasn't asking for conscience to be cleared, but for any further ideas on what could be causing the oil to go creamy.... clyinder gasket has been pressure tested, as i have said before only used to go a couple of miles in it, and it's well known for older cars to cream up.... i was after advice for any other reasons why it would go creamy.... engine was running at constant 90 temp after changing rad cap..... oil pressure was ok....

could be a cracked block or cylider liner, if the oil is creamy its obviously mixing with water in a big way, if it does that after a few miles! Would explain the cylinder pressures being ok.
If you knew that the oill was going creamy after changing it then it would have been wise to advise the buyer of this, letting him make up his own mind on whether to take a chance or not.
Imagine if the roles were reversed. And you brought a car that the owner knew was faulty. It pushes the limits of caveat emptor.
Plus he might know some friends capable of 'moderate persuasion'
only my opinion, sorry.

karma phooey...you have given the guy a spare engine. take it back give him his money back and tell him to go find another jeep with all the spares it needs. you don't need to clear a conscience cos are you a mechanic??? and was i professionally diagnosed as having a failed head gasket before you sold it? unless that was the reason for selling it you've done nothin wrong mate. so if he bought it and drove down the road and the d35 exploded is that your fault??? after we all know d35,s are shit. 8)

i would consider doing that, have given him  a complete top end and bottom end gasket set amongst the many spares he has... the guy wants me to pay the whole lot.... i've said no ... he has never owned an old vehicle before, only brand new, i explained to him that older cars will need constant maintanance hence the amount of spares i gave him. you name it... it was supplied.... as the guy mention above i ain't no mechanic but  i know enough to get by, i always like to be prepared so always make sure i have plenty of spares....

Lets be honest here. You fucking done the poor cunt.
BUT at the end of the day he was big enough and ugly enough to hand over the money in a private sale. Thats the way it goes. The fact that he`s been on the phone complaining is pretty understandable but as far as giving him his money back, I`m not sure. I mean did you rob him blind or REALLY poke his eyes out? If he`s a retard and it was a fortune then thats different to only a few hundred quid for someone who isn`t exactly stupid.
Its up to you mate, Good luck.
