«

Last night my Grand started to shake severly, the steering went loose and the whole car was nearly shaken to bits, it only lasted a few seconds (it wasn't an Earth quake:) ) this is the second time it has happened, what could it be? Im starting to think about getting rid.

Any modifications to the suspension?
Check:
Steering stabiliser
Front end ball joints, bushes etc.
Tyre pressures
Wheel balancing.
Tracking
I'd put my money on a shot steering stabiliser.

steering damper or stabaliser
check the steering control arms to see if anything has got loose.
check ball joints for wear and breakages

I had the dreaded death wobble once, my steering stabiliser was knackered. Put a new one on and no more problems.

Thanks guys, I'll get it in to get sorted, how much should a garage charge to fit a new sterring stabiliser? Another problem it has is whenever I am doing between 50 and 60 and I accelerate it shakes a bit, it doesn't shake if I am coasting, is this a flat spot?

Just a thought, check the front brake caliper(s) are not sticking. My XJ suddenly began to shake like hell between 50-60 out of the blue. Turned out it was near side front caliper stuck on rotor ever so slightly.
