Auto transmission query
« on: May 17, 2005, 11:56:02 PM »

Hiya guys,I have a `97 GC, I am about to start alot of towing across into France..Spain into Portugal and have just noticed in the hand book that I should "switch off" the electric overdrive whilst towing.
I can understand that the extra 500 rpm this generates would be of great use  in  cooling whilst just cruising along 45/50 mph but what about motorways when you are doing about 60ish on a great open stretch or slight down gradient, could it not be "switched in" again for those sort of conditions.
I do have an extra trans oil cooler fitted as well,
your comment would be appreciated,as ever...copey :D

Should be ok to use as you say. If you aren't sure if it's been serviced recently get the oil and filter changed (use Mopar ATF+4 or equivalent synthetic ATF) and get the brake bands adjusted correctly. The transmission should be serviced frequently if used for a lot of towing.

Mike, is that ATF also good for the AW4 box in our '97 4.0 XJ? We were looking for a synthetic ATF substitute other than basic mineral DIII.

Cheers, Paul

Synthetic ATFs are not reccomended for the AW4, don't know why.
