so why is it that the rear axle on a zj/g is so crap we have all heard of the failings of them but what is underlying reason is it poor design or poor assembly or sub standard parts at point of assembly

dunno Kev :?
tis a 35, same as the xjs, but they are a damn sight lighter  combination of a np231 = rwd + lsd/traklock + a shite load of torque when the turbo spools up, probably why the diesels can snap halfshafts easily
I put a np242 t/case in mine, which is a lot better than a 231, but not as strong apparently, so I run it in fulltime 4wd, tis much better,
the front prop is fubared on mine, so it sits in the shed a at the mo

I reckon the bearings in the 35 are just not quite up to the extra bulk of the ZJ. The V8 ones had 44s which seem ok, the WJ had the 44 and also never had the same appetite for bearings.

I think there's a number of factors:-
The carrier bearings are the same size as the ones in a Dana 30, common across the range as a front axle, making them inherently weak to start with.
Axles with the tracloc LSD naturally have contaminated oil by virtue of the metal to metal design of the clutch plates which wear in service. These contaminants accelerate the wear on the bearings.
The factory service interval is insufficient for the diff oil and I believe that main dealer procedure is to syringe the old oil out rather than remove the diff pan thereby leaving the heavier contaminants in place.
Axle assembly often not to Dana's own specs. I regularly come across late model low milage Jeeps with little or no carrier preload.

that is interesting Mik. so you are sayin that the diff oil in the axles loaded with the factory lsd should be swapped much more frequently?

I dont know what the recommended interval is without looking it up but if the syringe thing is true then the oil changes they do recieve can certainly be done more effectively.
Ive opened up some diffs and the oil has refused to leave on its own
They tend to be rather whiffy too

I wouldn't allow my lot to do that. The covers always came off for a proper inspection.

as far as i understand its suppled as a kit then assembled in the factory hence the 35 C being for custom.
also the zj has loads of bad design faults inc
the rear axle,
an alarm thats not waterproof despite been low down in the engine bay of an off roader?
a ram style air intake thats right behind the frount grill (just to make sure as much water as possible can get in???)
and sills made out of super soft thin metal less than 1/4 of a mm which is then coated in plastic stuff??? so as to allow for good rusability and also so it can be dented easily.
and putting the plastic bumper around thr frount tow eye so its relly hard to get a shackle on
and loads and loads of other stupid things

The oil change interval was 30,000 miles. Concequently, so was the bearing change interval.
