Degree shims
« on: December 30, 2007, 07:15:35 PM »

The rear of my XJ is lifted about 3 1/2"-4". It's been like it for about 6 months & has up untill now been fine, but it's recently developed some driveline vibes at 45-50mph. I can't really afford a SYE & don't want to drop the TC, so my question is would degree shims cure the vibes? If so what would anyone recomend, 3 degrees? Another question, do I want the diff pointing up towards the TC or parrallel with the ground? Thanks in advance.

Strange how it should have been alright and now it's started, if it was down to driveshaft angles  it should have done it to start with, I would check that you haven't got a seized UJ or a worn top or bottom suspension bush, if you do alter it you need to point the nose up towards transfer case.

Thanks for the quick reply. I thought it strange but I had a quick look & all seemed ok, but I'll get under it again tomorrow & have a better look.

Take the props off to check them properly just because there isn't any play in them doesn't mean that there not seized especially if you have been in plenty of water, you may only have one bearing cup seizing up.

Make sure the prop slide on the front prop isn't seized also

The centreline of the pinion should be parallel to the centreline of the transfer case so that both UJs operate at equal angles. If you point the pinion at the transfer case it will make it worse. 4" lift is about as much as you can get away with without a t/c drop or motor mount lift so it has to be set up pretty well to eliminate those nasty vibrations.

If it has been ok so far, something must have changed. As already mentioned, Take the rear prop off and check the joints for wear and tightness. If you're sure it's ok, check the front one as well. If they're both ok, in fact before you even check that, check the U-bolts holding the axle to the springs are still FT, If the axle is moving about it will cause vibration. It's also worth checking the bushing in the rear of the transfer case isn't very worn (does the slip yoke have a lot of up and down movement) or the transmission mounting hasn't turned to mush.
