Is this possible?
« on: May 31, 2008, 11:47:04 AM »

You`re probably read my electric fan woes  :-? Was thinking is it possible to run it independently ?? on a switch say?
Cheers guys, I`m scratching my baldy head as I write this .
My concern is the viscous fan isn`t going to cool me enough in traffic or at idle. :?:

Heres a thing, I think Mike mentioned this but not sure if this is what he meant. If my air con is out and needs regassing will this prevent the electric fan from coming on?
I`m fuckin crackin up here

Have you checked the fan fuse in the fuse box under the hood? If it's intact, pull the fan relay and short the two large terminals together, the fan should run. If it does, put the relay back. The viscous fan is perfectly capable of cooling the engine in normal circumstances. 4.0s without aircon do not have an electric fan at all. Apart from aircon operation it will only come on when the engine is very hot indeed. Try blocking the radiator grille with a bit of cardboard an run the engine until the temperature gauge goes above normal. The fan should come on.

Thanks Mike good to know I`m not dependant on the electric fan. The fuse is fine and was replaced for a new one just incase. Short the two large terminals together?

if the air con only needs regassing you should be able to bridge the low pressure switch and everything will work as it should, don't leave it linked out though or you will destroy your air con pump.

If you look in the n/s of the engine bay there is a round canister lookin accumuator with a switch on top, it has grey plug I think with 2 wires just remove this plug short the wires and switch the air con on, with the engine running the air con clutch should come in and then the fan should also come on, I will try and find a link I did some where which will help you

Cheers gary. much appreciated dude, although, having been informed i don`t really `need` the extra fan I`m still keen on the fucker working. maybe its me but i think cooler is better.  If you think about it, my avatar says it all.     The cooler king!

got to say I'm the same, I have put a massive gearbox oil cooler on and rigged the cooling fan up to a seperate switch so I can run it without the air con on, I have reason though and I'm paranoid after cooking one gearbox

Where did you source the cooler from Gary?? wanna do mine as it runs well hot, the 4.0L that is it regularly goes to 3/4 fro 1/2, but I know the lecy fan is working ok, but it shouldnt need it Im thinking of changing the stat to see if thats the problem.

Hows things in Stranraer Brian??? :-D

it was a transmission cooler that I fitted, shouldn't really do anything for the engine temperature, I know mine was getting hot because i have fitted a temp guage in for the transmission oil

I bought it privately from the states on eBay for about 3 quid and 15 quid delivery (bargain I'd say)

Removed the plug and joined the wires. Ran engine and turned on A/C. Nothing.
Put it back as it was.
The fanruns when the relay is shorted so the fan is fine. Its whatever governs the fan thats fucked me

The fan is controlled by the engine ECU based on coolant temperature and demand from the aircon, which is also controlled by the ECU.
