Got extra spots on their own switch which seem OK

Headlights go out and sometimes sidelights
Wriggling on/off switch gets them working again

sounds like the switch over heating its fairly common normaly any othe lamps wired up to them makes them worse evan on a relay but yours sounds like it is just tired :smt028

Stew

did you ever do the mod with the dinkywinkaz to give US style running lights?

Since Broxhead mine have been earthing out which caused my headlights to flash on and off.  I wondered why everyone on the M27 was pulling over and letting me through must have thought I was mud camoflauged plain clothes cop car :D  :D

Have disconnected the running lights and have my headlights back to normal just need to find the fuse for my sidelights and replace.

Stew

spent a while under the XJ's dash tracing down the fuse for the sidelights, what a brilliant place to put the fuse board

My manual doesn't seem to match my fuses either so had to resort to pulling each one till I found the blown fuse.

Now I have sidelights back.
