From 4 to 5 speed box - suggestions please
« on: July 30, 2008, 08:26:40 AM »

My SWB 1975 Mistusbishi J26 "Jeep" is now running well.

But the poor old 2.4 Ltr 4G53 "ASTRON" petrol engine Revs like an angry bishop above 55mph.
So I am wondering what options I have
e.g. Is there a straight swap of a 5 speed box?
An overdrive I could bolt on relatively easily?
Any other options?

Thanks to some advice from John Carroll I've fitted larger rims (16" up from the original 15") which has helped a bit.

Incidentally I've been told Cheapfest is at Bewdley 6/7th Sept this year - is that correct?

Dangerous -
Where did you get the little "Flash?" animation from.
Our youngest likes to create this sort of stuff but finds it difficult to think of humorous ideas.

If you right click the animation and select properties from the pop-up window then this should give you a good idea.

post a pic it may  help   or you could go bigger tyres if you have got the power and room to do it

Righty Ho folks,
From the top then.

Avatar - I'll take a look and see if theres more inspiration for Tom.

CJ3B - Sort of. If I could figure out how to post pics then I would pop one in here.
I've been told I might have to go for changing the ratio of 4th gear as my man in Bangkok, who only has 3 gears in his eariler model, hasn't seen any 5 gear boxes fitted (apart from those that have had a Toyota engine and box put in).
I've got alot to get my head around with this.
Mine is the one in the Phillipine Flood (apt seen as I live in Tewkesbury) which can be seen at www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/world/JapanPhotos.html

Angry Bishop - That would be a very noisy "Rev"erend then?

Bigger rims - I've gone from 15" to 16" which has helped, but not anywhere near a reasonable crusing speed for me to feel comfortable/safe on motoways.

I'll do a bit more digging around and post back.

Thanks for the comments so far - it all helps before I stick my paws in the piggy bank.

Bubba,

A saturn OD from Advanced Adapaters
or Warn OD "might" do the job.

Any tips on what information I need to provide these people with before I place an order would be appreciated.

These 4x4 techy bits are new to me so PLEASE keep it simple.

I've been in touch with Herm The OverDriveGuy in the states.
He's quoted £660 incl shipping for an overdrive.
Apparently I have to count my teeth and splines - Hmmmm.

Any thoughts as to which option I should go for would be appreciated as this means a lot of hours at the sweat shop to pay for this little lot.

Alternatively I could just wear ear deffenders and drive on Motorways between 2 and 4 am while the kids sit in the back swinging a Tilley Lamp.
 8-)

Aparently the easiest method to count teeth and splines on an old Mitsi is:
Pull the rear domed or flat cover off of the transfercase
and remove the nut that holds the transmission output
shaft to the transfer input gear.
Look at the end of the transmission shaft, it should have 6
or 10 splines. Re-install the back cover.

Remove the bottom side cover (at an angle) on the transfercase.
Put the transmission and transfer case in neutral.
Count the teeth on the big gear on the transmission
output shaft, it should have 26, 29 or 31 teeth.
My thanks for this goes to Steve K at Owens Export who can be contacted on stevek@owens-export.com
