My 95 4.0Ltr Auto XJ refused to start this morning
Ok before people go "not again" I have already done the following:
Fault Codes 12, 11 & 55, it is the 11 that appears to be cause - either the Crankshaft Position Sensor or the Camshaft Position Sensor has packed up.
Having searched the forums I have already checked that I have no spark and I do have fuel pressure as described by Mike in this post
http://www.jeepclub.co.uk/topic.cfm?ID=3847
so my conclusion is that the Crank Sensor is at fault.
What I really need to know is where do I find the Crank Sensor and is it an easy DIY job to change or should I just bite the bullet and tow the XJ round to MDG? Well at least I still have the Wrangler so I am not Jeepless
thanks in advance

Hitch a ride on a thread in the general section entitled Dr Mike (Yup him)
Mick O's going through similar woes at the moment so you should get some help there
I've also just remembered Steve Wright (Off roading.net) had similar problems last summer
Good luck

cheers for the tip, looks like Mick O had more fault codes than me. Will wait to see if he has any suggestions or tips.

It's usually crank sensor. easy to change you can find it on top left of bellhousing, access from under the jeep. They're about 70 quid I think.

just swap it, they throw up wierd codes when the cps goes, I spent ages chasing faults that weren't there, seems some circuits dont fire up if the cps is bad and you can get their fault codes and not the cps and the ecu doesnt get that far, I did have a flow diagram of the ecu startup logic will see if I can find it

The sensor is as Mike said, top left on the bell housing.
I couldn't get at mine from the top, had to drop the front prop to get at it from underneth.
Havent tried mine yet, found a problem with the rotor arm and had to get a new one.

thought about that but the MP3 player seems a cheaper and simpler option.

cheers for the hint on the front prop helped immensly. Thanks to all the rest who told me where to find the lil' bugger. It is a bit of a bitch to get to with a socket set when lying on your back under the car. It's off now just need the replacement and refitting to hopefully get the XJ running again.
