Winch bumper for ZJ
« on: October 07, 2008, 01:26:20 PM »

I really need to get a winch bumper for the jeep as the original plastic thingy is now hanging after rubbing against a few trees a week or so ago.

Trouble is I think all the bolt on ones are really expensive and seem to stick out a long way at the front and I would prefer to keep it as compact as possible to maintain approach angle. Possibly cutting back into the grill slightly for location of the winch.

I reckon I will have to get something made up but I plan on making a mock up one using ply first. Can any of you offer some ideas for design or do you know of anyone that has fabbed up a winch bumper for a grand?

I saw KOR bumpers last year when he was still designing them but I still think they stick out a mile and it would not be cheap getting that shipped over from the US. I like the style but feel you should be able to recess the winch plate 3-4" further toward the radiator and cut it into the grille.

Will daggie show up with some pics of his??  :-D

i like the rear bumper especially but agree the front can be recessed!!! were not plowing snow here!!!

i hate to swear but look at most of the land rovers, how they keep their crap approach angles!!! they recess into the front of the vehicle! why can't jeep supplyers do the same?

oh an check out the prices for those bumpers!!!
why are the towing points optional extras for 50 dollars???

Do you have any pics of how its tied into the frame rails? Come to think of it do you have any dimensions/schematics which could give me a head start with mine

I've seen seveal home builds which are based on this method of cutting into the front cross member and welding a winch mounting plate into a braket, then cutting the front OEM bumper to alow it to fit.

Now a rear winch - anyone tried that?
