slow startup after standing for a while
« on: October 10, 2008, 03:27:04 PM »

The XJ has started to develop an problem starting (first thought it was the immobiliser). Leave it more than an hour and you need to crank it for 5 seconds or so for it to start (4l auto) But if you turn key to last stop before cranking and wait a couple of seconds, turn off and repeat it fires up okay.
So it looks like a fuel pressure loss back to the tank.
Now will a dodgy fuel filter cause this issue?
I did have to replace thefuel sender, but that was over 6 months ago and had no issues uptil a few weeks ago.
Only other think is it is on lpg but as it starts on petrol and does this with the lpg system turned off I doubt it is that.
Is this a sign the fuel pump is on the way out?

cheers

oh and nothing on the obd2 scan apart from an immobiliser key read error, which i think is a red herring as this code appears straight after a normal start if you wipe all codes form the ecu

Put a pressure gauge on the test port in the fuel rail and check the running pressure (should be around 49psi) then switch off and watch the pressure, it should hold at least 30 psi, if not the pressure is leaking back.
