Problem with Auto gear box
« on: October 15, 2008, 11:55:53 AM »

Hi guys, sorry if this has been covered before, done a search and couldn't find anything.

My father's got a 2000 (I think, it's Y reg) Grand Cherokee V8 with Quadra Drive. The problem is that it keeps changing gear down or up when it doesn't need to and sometimes seems as if it's getting 'confused' around 2k rpm. Sometimes it won't change down, sometimes it won't change up and sometimes it changes two or three times in succession.

Our mechanic has suggested it might need a new (or recon if we can find one!) diff. As we have no specialist near us and our local Jeep dealership shouldn't be touched with a 300 foot long barge-pole, I was just wondering if this was a well known issue, or if anyone might have any other ideas?

Cheers in advance.

The most likeley cause on the V8 is a transmission input or output speed sensor. Take it to the Jeep dealer and get them to scan the transmission control module for faults.
