noisy xj

Right guys , please bear in mind that I am a furniture maker and know next to nothing about mechanics . So I have a 4l xj that has done 140k, just sailed through its mot , love them to bits , but this one has started to get a bit noisy . When it is started up from cold , it sounds very clackety until it has run for about 5 minutes then the noise disappears. When it is fully warmed up and under a bit of a load , ie. under accelleration or towing , it sounds very loud , sort of a faulty exhaustl, but the mechanic I use has said the engine is on the way out .( no idea what he meant ).If the noise was there all the time ,I could understand that the exhaust was gone but its only there when the engine is having to work a bit hard. Is it time to trade for something else , given that it has 12 months mot , or does anyone have any bright ideas what it may be, therefore what it may take to fix  it. Sorry for being a bit vague , but any feedback would be apprerciated. BTW the mechanic has had the truck up the ramp and chacked the exhaust --says it's ok !!

initial thought would be the hydraulic pushrod lifters starting to fail.

have you done an oil change and flush ?

Worn bearings on the crank? Can the noise be located to top or bottom of the engine?

Alot of early 4.0s suffered from piston slap from new. They rattled when cold then quietened as thet warmed up. some were fixed under warranty with revised pistons, but some others were left alone.

difficult to say where the noise is coming from, all these possibilities seem fairly terminal --is that so ? If this is the case am I better trying to get rid before something drastic happens or is there an economic solution-- difficult , I kmow without any of you being able to get your hands on the thing ?

Hi guys, sorry to drag this up again .The piston slap theory fits , it does quieten after a mile or so , or if i leave it warming up for a few minutes before setting off. The rattling noise when idling seems to come from the mid section of the exhaust and sounds really throaty out of the end of it. Could there be something going on inside the exhaust or does the sound of a dodgy engine failing come all the way through the exhaust . The noise does not seem to be coming from the engine area. When the car is under load ie accelleratin or towing the noise sounds worse and always from the exhaust, but I don't know if the noise is coming down the exhaust from the engine .Sorry this is so convoluted, but if it something not terminal I would far rather keep the xj than have the hassle of changing it -- cheers guys

Rattling can be a bastard to pinpoint. I changed my engine mounts and manifold a month or so back and the result was a rattle from somewhere.
Me being a flapper thought that it `must be serious`.
Still haven`t found the bastard no-one bar me has noticed it exists and some days I can`t hear it. I drove 110 miles the last week in silence so fuck it.
As far as the `hassle of changing` in this climate you`d need to pay someone to take it
