possible or not ?
« on: December 01, 2008, 03:09:21 PM »

HI Is it possible that i get 25-29 mpg from my 4l 1997 xj cherokee .
If it is why bother with gas . When i do a steady 55-60 mph the onboard computer says i am getting 25 mph. Great then i looked in the hand book and there's a sticker says i have to multiply by 1.5 to get UK mpg is this possible try multiplying 25x 1.5  :-D

You can get 25 if you drive very carefully all the time and stay away from traffic, but this will really aggravate photocopier salemen in leased Audis.

The handbook is full of shit. You need to multiply by 1.2, not 1.5 to get from US gallons (the old UK wine gallon of 3.8 litres) to imperial gallons (of 4.54 litres).

Therefore, 19 x 1.2 = 22.8mpg

My average using the 'puter is about 22 mpg, that's usually over several hundred/up to a thousand miles before each re-set.

I managed 25-26 mpg on a return trip up to Inverness on the A9, just taking it reasonably easy with cruise control in operation.

If you use it in stop-start traffic, e.g. town driving consistently then it will be lower. I do a wide mix between town, A roads and motorway so I suppose that can keep my average up a bit.
