the rear light on mine doesn't work when the rear door is opened only when the passenger doors open. then it also goes off after a period of time when the passenger doors are closed which is a pain when toyr unloading stuff. You might have to incorperate a switch into the light (?) to keep it on as i haven't loacted a switch on the rear door for it

The light is switchable, but is there not also a switch or sensor in the door latch?

I think the switch is inside the latch mechanism on the rear door.

You will need to remove it to find the switch.

At least that's where it appears to be on my '98 ltd.
