Whats the difference between a V8 rad and an I6 rad on a CJ7?
Is there an oil cooler built in on the auto models?

there is an oil cooler in all auto cj rads the diferance  is about 140quid from lighthouse compared to normal rad      in the  real world an i6 will keep a v8 cool no problem   so long as its in good nick   the key to it is to use a fan shroud if not you could easy have probs   the second is if you are using thermo fan that the clutch work properly i like the flexo lite jobs but thats up to you

ive struggled to keep mine cool with a 3 core cj rad in the past, a fixed fan and a good shroud is a must if heavy offroading is you thing

I just remembered where I'd seen one o' those flexolite jobbies.
Mick Harvey ran a 401 engined CJ7 at Cheapfest 2006, when he dropped the CJ into the mudpit by the course exit, it threw a blade straight through the expensive V8 rad.
I wont be putting one on this years christmas list.

Actually it didnt do the rad,it bent the blades which affected the centrifugal force on it and it knackered the bearings on the water pump, almost as expensive but rad was okay, but still a lesson learned though....fitted electrics fans after that,by the way twin electric fans from a Focus diesel fit rather well should anyone be interested, just as long as you get the direction right

You have the option to turn off the electric fan when wading or going into mud - also they have a safety ring round the outside of the blades now.

Apologies, I could remember that it was losing coolant from somewhere.
If I do come across a decent V8, I'll treat it to the proper spec rad.
I don't want to drive everywhere with one eye on my temp gauge.
Could I have a standard one rebuilt with extra cores?
Maybe that would cost more than just buying a new V8 one?

I got mine from e bay, cost me £150 with post. I looked around for months, and most i could find were £250.£300, ive got a 16 inch electric fan on it thats run by a sensor that ive fitted into the thermostat housing.
The sensor has 3 terminals so i can run 2 fan speeds, one for the road and one for offroad. it all works of a switch on the dash, ive got a chart somewhere with all the sensor temps and part no`s, do you want me to dig it out. :-)

If you could find the time that would be very useful, thanks.
I've got to fit an electric fan to Yellow Peril (CJ7  2.4 Isuzu)soon so I could use that as a test bed to develop my electric fan technology.

Did that sound impressive?
What I really meant was that I have a couple of old fans, one off a Golf, other was Vauxhall i think.
Basically I'm just too tight to buy a Kenlowe or some other expensive aftermarket fan kit.

Its not a v8, but in the falcon the cooling system holds 17 litres of coolant so it needed a decent large rad to get as much coolant in it as possible to stop her over heating. The rad in the pic is the old one i used for starting it up, it now has a large ali chevy rad.

Cheers
Those thermoswitches certainly are the mutts nuts.
All I'll need to do is find a steel 22mm fitting at work, weld it into a piece of tube and splice into the bottom hose.
I'm not keen on having a "fans off" overide even if you install overheat warning lights.
I know I'd get distracted and boil up the engine.
Better not to have that option I think.

The Falcon engine looks cool, I bet that's a real rocket on road.

You dont wanna fit it into the bottom hose, heat rises as you probly know so put it in the top hose or weld a 22mm fitting onto the thermostat housing. On the side if you can, not upright because if you lose any water it will not work properly, where as if its on the side the flow of water will hit the sensor(much better)  :-)

ive never had much luck with electric fan either, in my experiance the expensive kenlow/pacet fans dont move as much air as scrap yard car ones! they just dont move enough air for me, and they develop problems from water/mud too regularly for me. wouldnt have a problem with one on a road jeep tho

Project CJV8 will definately be a road jeep for posing in when the sun shines.
It's gotta have all the attributes of a CJ that I love.
ie: Soft top, big yank V8, auto trans, power steering, w/t axles.
Also a mild lift and bigish wheels, just for apearances sake.

But I still want it to have an off-road capability, otherwise I might as well just buy a Jago Geep or sumat like.

Oh yeah, and as I'm basing it on the ID of Yellow Peril II I'll keep the LHD.[/quote]

The SJ Cherry is far too cool, frostbite in fact, with that 1" of rusted out metal between 'screen and roof panel.
Not a problem at present.
Cos the transmission is buggered.
I traced the transmision fault which EVERYONE said was the Q/T chain.
Its not, its the THM400 autobox.
Pity I didn't realise that untill I'd spent a week swopping T/C over!
Now I gotta see if I can rebuild an auto box without making a balls up of it.
But I aint doin' it in these temparatures!

I should have said I'm looking for an auto box type CJ V8 rad, with the transmission fluid cooler built into the rad.
I got one on a six cyl auto CJ but that will be 3 core I reckon.
Mind you I haven't checked it yet, 'cos it be down on the farm an' it's too friggin cold to go there!
