clutch packs???? what are they
« on: February 09, 2009, 07:22:00 PM »

ok i've been speaking to various people about the problem I have which I've been advised is the clutch packs on the rear diff (read previous post about this).

Can someone please explain to me as a mechanical noob what the hell this clutch pack is...is it in the axle diff or the tranfer case (this is the first 4X4 i've owned) and why is it causing the rear axle to seem like it's binding and making a clonking noise to then release after a few seconds?

Just trying to understand whats going on and why. Has anyone else had this problem and did replacing the clutch packs solve the problem or did it cause other issues?

I've had quotes to replace them ranging from £250 - £950 + VAT. (£250 was from London Jeep to supply and fit).

Cheers

basicly small friction disks that sit inside the rear diff, you add an additive to modify the slippy-ness of standard diff oil and you get the correct amount of slip between the plates at a low plate speed difference they rotate against each other and at higher speed they lock up. They do wear out and need replacing, £250 is about right for having them replaced

Cheers for that info scrw..its a little more clearer now. Would that give me my symptoms then when they wear out? the jeep's done 166000 so it's pretty likely they are knackered.

I thought clutch packs wore out pretty quickly around 60K. Has the jeep had them replaced before?
