Topic: Noise from the front bottom (TJ) (Read 7220 times)

I've done a bit of running around in my recently purchased TJ and it seems it's in need of some attention.

First there is noise coming from the front end, like metal against metal sort of noise. I'm thinking something lose or worn bushes maybe? It's not a regular sound, more like a horse cart sort of sound if you know what I mean...

So I was wondering if you guys could advise what things I could check and how, so I can try locate what's making the noises.

I'm not a mechanic but I've always fixed my cars myself and hope to do the same with the TJ. It bugs me when there is something wrong with my car...

So if you could name a few likely culprits and I'll start bonding with my Jeep. Got Monday and Tuesday off and need something to occupy myself with :lol:

BTW could you recommend a good owners manual?

first thing to do is locate the noise. best thing to do is start by lying under the front bumper and doing the following... get someone to bounce the jeep up and down to see if it shows its self with that. next is to get the jeep runnin and get someone to turn the steering from lock to lock and again see if it shows its self. if that shows nothin ya gotta look at jacking up the front and rotating wheels and tryin to gently wobble stuff and just see what ya can find.

I've only been driving slowly in town and yes it make the gritty sound when driving over bumps or potholes and when turning.

OK, took off one wheel and had a look under the car today. There was loads of mud so blasted it all off with a hose.

Are those the UJs that have to be replaced?

That one don't look too bad:

The wheel hub look very rusty :| needs new collars?

Sorry to give so many questions all at once but I've got a week off mid April and would like to use it to get some things fixed. I do keep my cars in good shape and most people don't understand why I keep replacing everything with new bits and spend all that money.... but I don't smoke, drink or go out (a bit of a no lifer :roll:

I believe the answer is the front anti roll bar bush or the lack of it...double check the UJ's and any other bushing as you have it striped down.

Make sure all the nuts/bolts are tight on all the components that make up the steering & suspension system, also check the shock absorber lower mounting bushes for wear. Get a prybar in the steering knuckle upper/lower joints and check for wear (the parts in your photo with the castlelated nuts top and bottom). Check the track bar bushes too, especially the one that is attached to the axle as that can make a noise. Torque up the bolt that attaches the track bar to the axle, that usually sorts it.

Thanks guys, I'll start with the ARB bushes and see what's it like with new bushes fitted.

Is there a reputable online part supplier you could recommend or do I have to find the nearest dealer?

It's seems like the new arb bushes have eliminated the noise.

Some day will have to do the back too, they also have some play there.

Is the noise present all the time, is it relative to wheel speed, does it only do it in certain circumstances?

It's noticeable when driving slowly over a bumpy surface. I go over a bump or dip slowly and it makes that gritty/grinding noise.

Edit: that drop-link joint feels all solid, don't seem like something that could make a noise, but then what do I know....

That bushing is fitted "incorrectly" it should be either side of the anti roll bar I strongly suspect this to be the problem - other options become more expensive - for the sake of this bush it would be prudent to change it.

Yes two piece with a sort of castellated section the loops inside the bar - if that makes sense?

You will need to order four that's two each side.
