I know some of you will have seen this before, but I thought I’d post it here before it gets lost when I pull the JA site.
Here goes again!
I decided to fit a snorkel to my TJ just as a precaution as I’ve been through some fords etc. which have caused me to panic, on more than one occasion, in case I suck water into the engine rather than it enabling me to deliberately go deep water wading.
The kit was bought from
http://www.arbil4x4.co.uk as they are local to me and their prices seem quite competitive.
The kit was well packaged in a large box!
The kit contains all major bits you will need. The only other items you will need is some silicone sealer, a hole saw or the necessary tools to cut one by hand as well as the usual spanners and drill etc.
The kit comes complete with very good instructions and a cardboard template for marking the holes for drilling in the front wing as well as another template for marking the standard air box to enable the fitting on the new inlet.
Here is a copy of the installation instructions which are self-explanatory. (I couldn’t find these on the internet)
I removed the tray under the brake servo to reveal a vacuum reservoir which needs removing and repositioning.
Here is the template in position
The holes were cut with a pilot drill and then enlarged. I didn’t have the correct size hole saw so I used a wood one to mark the paint providing a guide as to where to drill. The hole was opened up using a junior hacksaw and a half-moon file and a small grinding wheel.
Here are some general photos of the installation most of which are self-explanatory.
Waxoyl!
These photos show the rubber edging installed to prevent the main tube chafing.
I just replaced the vacuum reservoir inverted on top of the new main tube and replaced the tray. It was well trapped into this position and there was no need to use screws etc.
The finished job!
I’ve seen the top of these snorkels get caught on a branch and all of a sudden, you’ve lost the top section, so I decided to install a safety cable just to keep the top section attached to the Jeep if the same were to happen to me. I used a length of old bike brake cable and a couple of electrical crimp connectors with the coloured plastic stripped off.
I hope this might be of some help to anyone else who is thinking of fitting one!
