tyre tread pattern

which is the better tyre off road ? the conventional style like the BFG (diamond pattern) or the recip pattern ?

both tyre styles claim to give excellant grip and road holding etc, but which would be the better tyre pattern to go for ignoring the make ?

I like the recip style (Baja Claw etc) - what do tractors use?

depends what you want really, the Recip is for heavy mud and will be noisy on the road

the BFG is a good road tyres that can cope in the Mud

the bfg is ok but the recip has the leaning more to offroad  i cant say that the bfg realy is that good over a lot of other muds
if it were my cash it would be the recip how do they stack up cost wise

I had some Greenway tyres similar to the recips and they are not at all noisy on the road, good grip too, even in the wet. They now sit on my mates disco who does 80 miles a day on the motorway with no complains and it recovered me from a boggy hole the other day no problems. Plan to put a pair back on the Jeep when the current muds wear out

IMO, BFG's are great for occasionall offroad use and get you out of a wet field.

Recips are full on mud tyres which perform brilliantly and are storming on rock. They are also a maxxis mudzilla copy which the US guys use for rock crawling.

They aint to cleaver on wet tarmac though, although neither are the bfg muds.

Can't complain with the recip. I use them for off-road and v happy with them. The only place where they might not be up to the BFG MT design is on side slopes, I've had a couple of interesting moments there and the centre section of the BFG's might help reduce the lateral slippage.

If it were a decision between the 2 for off-road only use I would say Recip. And they look better too  8-)

I have a set of mudzilla similar patern as the recip "FN shite" but strong side wall - BFG are a bloody good tyre with shite side wall protection.
What do you need the tyre to do?

You missed the simex, special track, lion thingys, fedoma pattern then ;)

i was reading on the web site that conducts all the 4x4 wich competitions and punch trials (forgot the name) and they have a list of approved tyres for competion use, mainly to cut out the damage done by serious agressive tread patterns. IIRC the diamond pattern was under review to be made illegal for their competition use. not sure as to whether they have implemented it or not but they did compile a list of approved tyres.

i didn't include the simex as it is a very agressive tread pattern of the bfg where as the recip tread is totally different. the recip is slightly more noiser due to the edge tread pattern but was interested to hear peoples opinion of the two, mainly because i will be needing new tyres at some point so still unsure which way to go in regards to patterns. Dont want to use simex as they are too agressive for what i want from a tyre

A friend ran Simex on his Landcruiser and I recall him saying that the MPG was quite significantly reduced due to the rolling resistance caused by the large lugs. I also recall a comment that they were half worn after 8,000ish miles.

That'll be the AWDC comp safari list. Simex jungle trekker's are aloud, Extreme Trekkers are on the banned list.  The banned list is acutally very short compaired to the list which is aloud - but all the information is on the AWDC website.
