Bloody CJ7 Fuel Gauge

Hi all, oh yes I have CJ7 Gauge trouble, nasty affliction.About a million years ago some Jeep types in Doncaster fixed the  FUEL AND WATER gauges on my CJ but when I got home the fuel gauge didnt work.It is a long way from Cheltenham to Doncaster so I didnt go back.
Anyway, some years ago I heard of a fix involving wires and stuff and I might have downloaded it but the brain is getting slower now and I can't remember a thing about it.
Help is needed (not just with the gauge....) and appreciated if anyone knows a fix an idiot like me can do?

How old is the tank sender??

Might be worth slaving in a new sender unit and see if the gauge comes alive.  One dodgy point is the earth lead for the sender - usually it's in the worlds worst place for collecting rust, if it isn't making good contact with the frame the sender won't send shite to the gauge.

There is one wire going front to back from gauge to sender - if memory serves correct it's pink.  There's another wire coming from the sender forward to the crossmember just in front of the tank, you should see a termination eye screwed to the cross member - make sure you have good metal to metal contact here.  I moved mine across a bit and made a new hole, removed the paint from under the eye end then covered both sides with some kick ass silicone type stuff.

Other than that make sure it's wired up correctly.

When I did my resto I used the old gauge with new wiring and sender.

At the end of the day it's a simple system - gauge, sender and wiring in between.

If you need a new sender unit you have to drop the tank  :roll:

oh mine gives a rough idea, full to 1/4 in 60 miles, will then sit there not moving for anything up to another 100+ miles then within 5 miles will be empty, no warning.

fuel gauge roulette #-o  dont you just love it

thanks for the tip, I will go and "cuddle the concrete" this weekend and get crap in eyes, skin knuckles, bang head and generally have a great time swearing at my Jeep!

great article, and a good excuse to go and buy a multimeter and have a check around.

I looked at your restoration and am very impressed- I have owned my cj since 91 and it has been patched up, but I have long dreamt of doing what you did.

I am moving house soon and it comes with a big-ish garage so who knows......
