Whilst buried in some section of Pirate Hardcore last night I came across these guys..... Then I had to find out more
The MB OM617 is apparently the longest lasting of the diesel variants regularly achieving 500,000 miles.
For us that means mid 80's estates with the 2.9 5 cylinder turbo. Seems these guys in the USA of A are sticking them in fatties wranglers and FSJs
Monster diesel in a flattie.....oh yes
Can't see it in anFSJ though :jpshakehead:

The 210 had a turbo diesel with little electrics, this is now the engine of choice - many are dropping them in the 460 and such, and yes 500k is possible.

I've a bit of experience with Merc diesels and currently helping fit one in a car,I reckon the 606 is the best diesel motor merc have produced ,this one is running stand alone ecu conversion..have vids on phone but can't load here...

In the mid 80's......

Were these engines built into the 90's ??? Otherwise it's going to be 30 years old :icon_twisted:

This motor is a 99 with 24V 170 ish HP and electronic controlled P series Bosch inline fuel pump,like Isle of Man said they are relatively simple,the main problem is that they were never released with a manual box,auto only,none of the manuals were deemed up to it (although my friend has fitted a 6 speed merc )the 210 auto is very complex and almost impossible to retro fit..we had to machine a sprinter single mass flywheel and fitted plus sprint clutch

Nice one IOM.
I remember the 6 cyl variant....... Remember being 5 up in a cab from the airport in Berlin and the driver holding it at over 100mph no probs....... :icon_twisted:

But a 6 cylinder in a flattie....... Might need a nose stretch :hysterical:

not the engine of transplanters choice though ??merc  made some rubbish after the 606,no experience of this motor in your pic but the previous common rail was not great at all

As said, 651 is todays engine and current Euro6 compliant......The 606 is for transplanters and 15 years old thus not strangled by the current emission directive from Euroland.

Cummins seem to be the daddy stateside......compound turbos and hellooooo 1000hp and not much less torque....... :icon_super:

Read the merc thing yesterday, then found a guy who put a Vag 1.9tdi unit in and working on a Vag 2.0tdi unit one as well. Now I have to ask the question anyone ever fitted a 200 tdi unit to a Jeep. Ill hide behind this wall for a while  :icon_biggrin:

You can buy a kit in America to fit the VAG diesel unit into a Jeep, I can't recall the name of the company right now.

You can buy a kit in America to fit the VAG diesel unit into a Jeep, I can't recall the name of the company right now.

Its prob the same bloke, I didn't look at the date lol. But a 200tdi out of a "cough" LR is a simple engine and plentiful.

i read years back that someone did a conversion for the old vw td5 lump for the cherokee
