very true but there are a few reasons for doing it this way,

1 it means I clean and inspect every part as it is used
2 when first run any fluid leaks will be readily visible
3 makes the assembly and fitment a much easier job

but the most important reason.. I enjoy doing it :003: saying that can't wait to get it dirty

starting to get pretty now, bolts have arrived and while not a 100% full set the few that are missing are easy to identify, one small set back the thermostat housing I ordered is wrong, its about 1/4" too narrow on the bolt holes (probably an oldsmobile unit as they almost the same) so still on the look out for replacement

lots more cleaning and painting again today, and a few more bits fitted

[attachment=1]

if anyone else is rebuilding a 304/360/401 and is interested i have kept a record of bolt sizes by component for the V8, will work out a lot cheaper to buy from local suppler for the other 360 than the £70 for the 90% set I got from the states

bit of a set  back today, it seems there are different water pumps for the V8, the problem is with the one fitted on the rebuilt engine does not allow the fitment of the alternator brackets I have

[attachment=1][attachment=2]

before I think about spacers or making a new bracket, is there a standard bracket available to fit?

I remember my bro inlaw having the same problem, He used a spacer made from a piece of round bar and drilled through the middle.

Nosebolt 1 - 0 special tool

took the press fit pulley off the power steering pump to clean and paint it, was well chuffed as did it without the "special tool" only to find you need the special tool to refit the bloody pulley,  :icon_redface: anyway finally worked out the special tool just screws into the pump shaft and uses the tread to wind the pulley back on, so extended the thread on a bolt, turned a small ally push flange and a couple of spanners and its back on.

only a small thing but been staring at it for days so in my head its a big victory :icon_super:

stuck at home today while Tan uses the GC, her bike is haveing some new pipes built, anyway did a bit more, took the carb off the old engine and gave it a clean, was only rebuilt 200 miles ago, and converted the auto choke to manual.

[attachment=1]

only hold up at the moment is the alternator brackets, the set I have are for a non AC but this engine had AC, if I cant get the right set then looks like I'm making some, if I do then recon I will relocate the alternator a bit higher, same as the PSP, seen some nice billet kits I may copy but may have to be in steel, will see whats available for free :003:
