Title: The Blue TLC Project
Post by: Dutch on November 04, 2011, 11:02:09 AM
Thought I'd best start a separate thread to keep you in the loop of my progress in giving Blue some long overdue TLC.

Apart from the initial pressure wash when she got home last Saturday and relieving the floor of half an inch of mud a rotary wire brush on a cordless screw driver is my weapon of choice at the moment. (you have to be cruel to be kind  :010: )

I have been digging into a couple of areas this week and found following :

Joblist :

a) Floor pan drivers side weak and rusted through in several places
b) Rear OS wing above plastic arches rust resulting in going into 3 holes
c) Front NS wing @ bulkhead just in front of top door hinge, severe rust going through and through
d) Rear at bottom near fuel filler cap and opposite near number plate rust going into hole.
e) Miscellaneous small & large bubbles paint in various places.
f) Bottom needs brushing mud & crap off and re-protecting
g) Inside tub from under dash upto raised step to rear bench needs re-protecting.
h) both seats needs re-covering in leather
i) loose wiring under dash needs tidying up.
j) Install CD/Radio and new speakers
k) When inside tub is protected apply floor covering
l) Mirror polish rims[/s] done
m) Mirror polish SS bits aquired from Bubba and fit (hinges, heater air intake and cover, rear bottom corner trims, os & ns rear mirrors, etc...)
n) Take off front bumper, sandblast and re-painting
o) Fabricate SS tubular mirror polished thick walled side rails
p) Fabricate SS tube half (safari) doors
q) Re-paint seat frames satin black and re-fit
r) Full re-spray.
s) Full polish of clear coat
t) aquire & fit new rear shock absorbers
u) repair rear os roll bar @ tub attachment (rust)
v) repair fuel & temp gauges or fit whole new speedo clock
w) touch up all paint damage & scuffs on interior[/s]
x) Make some sort of all weather cover for back end when using bikinitop only. (tonneau cover ?)
y) floor cover trims & tidy up
z)

Having crawled over and under her all week she is in really good nick and all body repairs are pretty superficial in the greater scheme of things.  The rest is just tidying up, protect against further attacks of metal moth , enhancing & improving.

The only drawback is that I have to be here 8 hours a day but I've still got 7 days holiday to burn before X-mas  :icon_super:

Watch this space  :holland-flag-44:

What is all this mirror polishing?  Perhaps you should can the stainless and just buy mirror made parts. Lol

Fooook that's big & spensive.

Had another good day in the workshop. That's 3 days on the trot now.

Keep on brushing away at the bottom of chassis, wheelarches & tub and applying protection as I go along.
Started putting in floor cover in the tub.  Got hold of a length of this plastic penny stud matting they use in lifts and
other industrial places.

Have to go to work again tomorrow  :011:

Pfew.....spent a day removing the crap from the front drive train, chassis, springs & steering links. All good now and re-protected

Noticed that one of the brackets holding the leaves of the cart springs together on os front spring has come undone, possibly split.

Anyone got one lying around ?

Leaf spring clamps are sometimes open at the top, is it definitely broken?

Just checked, it's a type that wraps around and then clamps together at the bottom with a square hole one end and a lug tother end that fits through
and possibly hammered around to lock in place.

It's deffo sheared on one corner.

Spoke to my fabrication manager colleague this afternoon........ss sidebars goin into production tomorrow  :icon_super:

Going for a T-bar rather than a U'e, screendump in a word doc, pic was protected

Seats to upholstry lady next week  :icon_super:

Been thinking of this rather than traditional half doors......thoughts/advice ?

Only because proper half doors cost a fortune and think I will feel a bit unprotected with nothing there.
These can be made in house for a song.

TBH the point of gettin the spares was to sell to try and recoup some of the hideous outlay, but if i aint got a fuckin clue what a sheet/lump of metal is i cant sell it or use it :banghead:

Good call, and thought about this myself but the lower hinge bolts through with a nut at the back so M8 is possible here.

The wind screen itself however (top of the hinge) is threaded so will have to get UNC to match.

Short of drilling out and re-tapping with M10 or something.

Been a good few days in the shop:

Reconstructed OS & NS window pillars, Stainless inserts bonded into place, and filled, NS in process of sanding.
All areas that have been ground down on the bodywork have now been filled.
New stainless bulkhead behind NS rear wheel.
Cleaned out engine bay and dealt with flaking paint (blue hamerite), protected chassis and other bits and bobs I could not reach from below.
Taken bonnet off, wire brushed all inside, flaking paint and minor rust, recoated in blue hamerite and re-fitted.
Seats taken apart, to go to be recovered tomorrow.
Sprayed front recovery point & airfilter lid in audi-red.  Front recovery point to be bolted to bling bumper.
filled and faired gaypod holes in front wings

Hate sanding filler, you think its smooth and then its still a moonscape or you sand to deep and have to refill again  :icon_sad:

Can't wait till Saturday to carry on. :icon_super:

Correct.  What also helps is that since the windscreen hinge bottom bolts through, that will help with strength.

On the other hand.....I've dragged some crazy shit out of the shipyard.  Not everything HAS to be welded today,
like you say, as long as it is non structural, no worries.......I cant see myself 'gluing' my chassis together but I'm sure
NASA has got a solution for that too  :icon_biggrin:

In my role as Father of the Old Iron Chaplain I hereby formally christen this Birty's CJ7 "The Dutch Barge"  :headbanger:

or just 'The Barge' for when we are informally referring to it, or after it  :003:

As the Molotov knows, names are inherited through reality rather than an idealistic fantasy, so there is no need to thank me dood
surely 'The Clog' would be better, or perhaps 'Daffy'?
Title: Re: The Blue TLC Project
Post by: Dutch on January 06, 2012, 11:18:58 PM
I got my hands on a 5 litre can of industrial bitumen paint.  It is used to protect steel frames in the construction industry.
All good because in essence it is just 'TAR' but then a bit more gucchi.

I'm sure that the bottom of the truck will not develop any rust in the next few years.

The only thing is Bitumen will never really harden out like traditional paint.  When it gets hot it will go soft'ish.

In my case not really a problem because I put this plastic penny stud matting in as an interior floor cover. but I painted the
transmission tunnel in it as well which is not covered.

I may have a black mark on my boots now and again but metal moth wont have a chance.

Title: Re: The Blue TLC Project
Post by: Dutch on January 08, 2012, 08:42:39 PM
Tomorrow we'll have some fresh metallic on the truck.

Errrr....no  :010:

Only had a 1/4 Litre tester from the supplier so Darren (my painter) said, lets do the bonnet.  Should be enough for that and then clearcoat
so we can see how it looks.  No use starting on the patches on the truck because if you run out even a new batch could have colour difference.

All good......untill........just before last coat...... fooking thing drops off the hooks on the floor .....Big Oh shit moment !!!!

No damage done but after a quick wipe down not enough paint left to finish ...... the areas that do have a decent covering looks the muts nuts.

After a beer to calm the nerves made a battle plan for the truck......and Daz said, seeing that my name will be on it when you drive it into the yard
no use trying to blow in odd patches..... it'll look like shite.

I'll call the supplier, organize more paint & clearcoat and do the whole truck for you.

Sort of dreaded having to take more gear off the tub and having to sand the whole thing ........ but if somebody offers to come back Saturday to finish bonnet
and then do whole truck, and then come back on Sunday for clearcoat, I wont argue with him.

The whole TLC thing is now turning into quite a serious affair  :greggmo:

may be a silly question but seeing as you have already taken of the hinges, why have you not taken the screen frame off for painting?

the wiper motor wire unplugs from the dash switch and feeds out easy enough and the cowl seal is only held on with self tappers

Something very theraputic in unwrapping a CJ7.  Had a friggin cold all weekend and I guess that hanging around
in two pack clearcoat yesterday was not a brilliant idea....really felt like s*1t and still do so stayed home today.

Anyway, and you knew this was coming....I will now bore you to death with the buildup...WO7 revisited  :hysterical:

before you ask, that crater under ns rear light I found @ final prep, dug out and primed, no time for fill, will be hidden under number plate.

As far as the paint job is concerned : 2 areas to correct
1) OS sill below chequerplate to redo because of silicone contamination
2) NS panel with jeep logo/birty CF decal : too much clear coat and uneven so rub back with 1500 then 3000 and polish.

Then light polish of clearcoat on whole truck to bring out the sparkle.

Just a small update.   Now in the building up / tarting up stage.

All Bubba's bling fitted : hinges, mirrors, rear corner protection

My sprayer takes quite a bit of pride in his work so bonnet had to go back to the yard's sprayshop. Due to low temperature in my garage
clear coat had gone flat in places and also (as they call it in the trade) blooming in places. Since it is such a visual piece of
equipment now in controled booth, spray new clearcoat and cook at 60 degrees C.

As for other bits, seats (leather lady), seat frames, spare wheel carier (yards painters) & safari doors (fabricators).......now in the hands of people that offered to help, well meant promises, but unfortunately they're not in a rush .... in true cornish fashion...... we do things dreckly.

I know I wont be taxing it for a while ......... but I want to finish.....stick it in a field, take a bunch of pics and show it to you guys.

It really, really looks the mutts nuts (but you'll be the judges) and I'm very happy with the truck.

After a very enjoyable day out in Blue + missus, driving the beast does not fase me anymore.  On a run she only wants to go faster but limited it to
55-60 max for now.

Ok......fitting out time now in preparation for brakeout :

Nick my FIL's neighbour had not an ammo box but a army/navy spec flares box for me with a very intricate closing system. Not as big as I would like but it will give me the secure storage I was looking for and very in keeping with the truck.

I also fitted the rear seatbelts, silly me, the rear bench is split in seat and backrest anyway and the centre of the rear rear seat frame caters for fixing belts so in all it was
all of 15 mins work.

I aquired a BMW 2 gallon emergency fuel can many many moons ago with a neat little 2" hole in the middle so cold molded a stainless bracket + M12 bolt poking out, to fix to the inside of the rear wheel arch.  So just have to make a 2" disk, and neatly bolt the can away on the side. Off course all mounted on stickyback neoprene to prevent rubbing.

It's nicely coming together now. :greggmo:

the only things you will need at the breakout is recovery points, shackles and strops.. plus beer of course

while i do take jerry cans of fuel, i don't carry em while off roading, they are left at the camp, there is always someone who will collect it for you if you run out like i seem to do every event :003:

As mentioned very early on I noticed that one of the clamps holding the leaf pack together on the os front, rear bit of the leafs had let go.

Does this need putting back on before brake-out, buy new (lighty's ?)  can I get away with a couple of heavy duty clamps ?  (not jubilee but the ones with nuts)

all these do is hold the spring pack together and stop the leaves moving sideways. some heavy duty clapms should be suffice, i've seen metal cable ties used as well. ideally they should be on as soon as possible as you dont want a leaf to slide out into the tyre (worse case)

Trail cover ....... what trail cover ?  :003:

Another step in the fit out.

I know it wont win in the fashion competition but it will sure as hell keep the rain out.

Heavy duty plastic held together with 5" tenting tape and reinforced on the corners for the pieces of string.

clues in the name, TRAIL cover.

when at home use the garage, but without a full roof on a weekender in this lovely country with its not so predictable weather, keeps your seats dry overnight

Reading Chris's preparations reminded me to grease up the whirly bits underneath.

Got this gucchi blue goldplated JCB grease from WillCJ.

Found nipples on the main drive shaft couplings (are they what you lot call UJ's?) goin aft.

Are there any other nipples under there?
Title: Re: The Blue TLC Project
Post by: MOCAJ on March 25, 2012, 04:50:34 PM
you should be able to grease your front suspension too, top ball joint and all the track rod ends including the one on the pitman arm

not sure if you have greasable uj's, if you have do them  :greggmo:
Title: Re: The Blue TLC Project
Post by: Dutch on March 25, 2012, 06:16:58 PM
Thanks for that......so went next door to Steve (landy lover extraordinaire  :icon_eek: ) to ask if he had a nipple grease gun...... gave me some piddly
bycicle pump style gizmo ....... which did not work....... now why isn't that surprising  :003:

Fortunately big car boot around the corner and picked up the beez neez of nipple grease guns for ......... 3 quid  :icon_super:

Drive shaft UJ's outer OK.....but who put a nipple IN the UJ and I cant get my nozzle on it no matter which way I turn the blooming thing  :jpshakehead:

Front wheel UJ's I cannot detect a nipple but will check the steering gear and front suspension.
Title: Re: The Blue TLC Project
Post by: MOCAJ on March 25, 2012, 06:21:34 PM
aah, some grease nipples you will need a needle adaptor for, most of my fronts are like that, just look like a dimple with a ball bearing in. Clear the shit out then
Press the needle adaptor in and give it loads  :greggmo:
Title: Re: The Blue TLC Project
Post by: WillCJ on March 25, 2012, 10:13:24 PM
Hey!, good to see a pic with the doors on.
For the grease , I may have mentioned it, but you need a cartridge-style gun, but you can transfer to a smaller one , bit messy.
Ah, grease nipples, should be already in the propshafts uj's (maybe awkward at any angle, try lifting the chassis to increase prop angle, then turn prop to most 'open' point) and slides, not always in the half shaft uj's(front), but you should find some little bungs screwed in to them,in the corner same as you see on the props. I think if nipples are in they could get knocked off. Put it on full lock with the front jacked up. I screw the caps out and a nipple in and grease them if been in mud /water, till grease comes out of each cap. In fact i made an extension with a 1/4 unc bolt, drilled down the middle and tapped for a nipple in the head end as they are a bit fiddly! most might think thats going a bit far, but I am happy!
don't forget your steer joints while you have the grease gun out!

Filled up today after cleaning, first time since Harptree and no use of the truck this week.

Well pretty surprised really : did 335 miles round trip incl froading and burned 70 litres of juice.

By my reckoning that gives me a combined mpg of 21.6

Filled up just before hitting M5 and drove home 160 miles (at roughly 57/58 miles on the clock) and this afternoon put 30 litres in which
translates into 24 mpg  :icon_eek:

All not as dire as expected.....good truck.....good truck  :greggmo:
