performance upgrades forced induction engine swaps
« on: February 20, 2015, 10:59:26 AM »

On with sorting out some initial problems with my new Jeep. Its a 98 model XJ and I'm going to add a lift and poss some 33s to it after its repaired.

What I would like to know are best ways to get some more performance out of the engine. Has anyone squeezed extra power from these 4.0 units and what works best?

Or has anyone done an engine transplant or supercharger :-)

If anyone has any bits lying around let me know too thanks  Nicola

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/xj_swap.htm

But seen a couple of cheaper supercharger kits for about £2500.  Typical 'boy racer' mods don't seem to do much ?? Is that true?

Seems to be about 250bhp with supercharger kit

If you are going to use it Offroad then what You have got under the hood is great.......gearing and lockers will be what you need to address to increase Offroad ability......

If you want to go fast on road......save your coin and sell it for something with a V8 £2,500 will by you a lot of hooligan V8 jeep stuff. Early LHD 5.2 or maybe 5.9 grand cherokee..... Mid 90's.

There is a Birty member with a  Supercharger on this club forum.........tis on a TJ with lots of nice bits.......he'll tell you it's the worst spend he's done........a waste of time......

If you are serious about wanting more power look at Novak adapters for a v8 conversion. Little bolt on bits don't do much apart from make the exhaust sound a bit better and empty money from the bank account.

Superchargers just use fuel quicker for little gain from what I've heard.

Stop now before you have started and think exactly what you want.

more power speed etc = go and buy something else

the 4ltr is more than capable in regards to power, Willow will confirm this with his racing.

no point having power if you cant get traction off road.

the 4ltr engine performs well enough as it is, bolt on goodies that claim 10 to 15hp gain maybe right but will you actually notice the change apart from a graph on a piece of paper, i think not

look at pirate 4x4 for what they do to their jeeps and actually what changes do entail (body modification and expense is the normal answer)

If you want 33s you'll be spending a couple of grand on a regear next.

I've just bought a cherokee with a k&n cold ram air thingy on it pulls like a train
Even with 32's on it looked it up should get you 8-9 bhp feels to me like it might have engine runs dead clean and emissions at mot today where really low .003 co
It might feel pokey as I had a zj before 1/2 tonne heavier  :hysterical:

Thanks for thr replies. I already drive things which go fast ;-) (see photo) ... BUT I want to go fast in an XJ Jeep lol AND use it off road. I'm a woman .. I'm very demanding lol!!!

Thanks for the advice need to do more research on supercharger but almost all of you say no. That doesn't appear great news ..  Add ons seem poor so that kind of leaves engine swaps :-/ .. Time to get reading more thanks  :098:

280-300 bhp would be awesome to be honest. Just old skool fun like an ML55 but in a proper car like a Jeep :-) the price is great value too so that's something I now need to google. Or maybe tomorrow. Been a long day and wine is calling haha
