Title: Body flexing?
Post by: ferretjuggler on March 16, 2010, 07:03:39 PM
How much body flexing will I get on my 2 door FSJ when I cut the roof off? :003:

I got a plan wot will circumnavigate all my damage/rust issues

Basic idea is to keep the standard  fixed windshield and perimeter frame, the door tops will remain and a CJ styled roll bar behind the front seats wot I can pull a bikini top over in summer.

During the winter I will park it up and start saving for next summers petrol :greggmo:

It's just occuring to me that the body may flex across the door openings causing the gaps between the wings/door/rear sides to alter continiously.

That would be embaressing in the extreme. Like a Micky Mouse special.

Major fabrication work required????????

We crew cabbed my Cherokee a few months ago and put some strength back in, the whole thing works really well and we actually have a little more body flex which keeps the wheels on the deck.... tis post may or may not help, good luck and keep us informed, cheers Maf

Cheers I read the thread already.
Different technology doin that to a unibody vehicle.
FSJ could be awkward.
Land Rovers (ooops sorry) got megga stiff chassis which is why the leaf sprung ones handle like skateboard :jpshakehead:
But no body flex issues as chassis is stiff as board.
Jeep chassis designed to twist somewhat, body too, but door openings pretty rigid.
Make the body too rigid and it will fight the chassis  :violence: stress cracking a good possibility.
Make the body too bendy you got a mobile jellywobbler :icon_redface:

Arrrrrrrrgh!........
I roll in from the pub and I'm confronted by an FSJ snuff movie :011:

I only just realised the tailgate needs cutting down by 2", why the fuck aint I noticed that on any of the other choptop threads?

I got a Mahindra to build this summer, otherwise I'll be totally carbound all summer.

Everything else has gotta take a back seat or else I'll get nowhere at all.

Just remember "Any fool can restore a classic vehicle, it takes a man to cut one up"  :banghead: From the IFSJA somewhere :greggmo:

Seem to remember JP did this many moons ago with a very rare to us... mid 60's FSJ 2 door 'VAN'

The nostalgia freaks and resto cardigan wearers were outraged.

They ended up caging most of it to stop it flexing in the middle...... looked good no roof just pick up style cab top ..... 38s and a SBC 350

FSJ panel vans are as rare as rocking horse shit over here, I've never seen one in the metal yet.

Rather sad to chop a good one if it were all solid :icon_eek:

There was a 2 door wagoneer back in the '60s, then jeep dropped it.
But if ya look close at the narrowtrack Cherokee 2 door.........it's the panel van shell recycled for the '70s with some designer side windows stuffed in it.
