Need some advice, will a LHD fixed steering column fit in place of an adjustable RDH unit? both are floor change manuals.
After the weekend lil yella now has 2” up and down as well of left and right movement when locked. So also now in the market for a CJ steering column, want to go for a fixed rather than an adjustable.
-
is the Chief the same?
-
cant see from here

not sure that went to plan...
did the 4 torx bolts up sunday, you were right they were loose. driving back from the dentist today and the column collapsed. no steering, no ignition and soiled pants, back home now thanks to a tow from a m8 and about to start stripping down the tilt column, but original question still stands, will the rigid LHD column from tonka fit in lil yella? need to get it drivable for work
-
def need a new column, just stripped it down and the casting that the 4 torx screws screw into has fractured :banghead:
-
thats what happens when someone pulls on the column, if i remember correctly you may be able to get a rebuild kit and parts from an vauxhaul senator as they used the same column sheathed in different cover.
-
think i would rather swap it out for a fixed unit, never liked the tilt column

got a box in the end from Tris (Thanks M8, :003:) who is breaking a 2.5 RHD CJ7 so straight swap for the current one :hysterical: :hysterical: yea no such luck, nothing wrong with the new box and even got the old one off easy enough in well under an hour, only problem was the 2 bolts that sheared off in the chassis leg. one is out after a couple of hours but the other is playing silly buggers, not enough for my stud extractor to grip on so now resorted to grinding it flush and have started drilling it but that meant dropping the front leaf spring to get room for the drill, going to try and re-tap it but if that fails have the heli coils waiting.
finished for the day now, cant see in my shed for tools i need :banghead: but got all day tomorrow in the nice heated workshop to finish it, just need to get and fit a clutch before friday so we have a jeep for the Turkey Hunt
-
forsooth what of yon v8

the sheared bolts wernt the worst part of the day, got chatting to one of the blokes at the workshop and he told me of his 2 jeeps he scrapped when his kid was born 10 yrs ago, coulpe of cherrys i thought so no biggy, turns out the were chiefs a 2 door and a 4 door, one with a chevy 350 conversion and the other with the 'original' 6.6lt, tried to sell the pair for 500 quid but no one wanted em so he weighed em in for scrap, i was almost in tears
-

going to fit the one from BD and then rebuild the one thats in there (or you are) and keep as a spare or even fit it in yella
-
the chev powered one may have been an original buick powered jeep
-

i share your pain :010:
-
that would explain why he thought it was a buick engine, twas me that asumed it was a chevy

-
v little >:D
:smiley-whacky084: TBH im just happy my 401 domination continues :hysterical:
-
the reality is it might and might not have need i remind you of the 7.2 litre 304 on ebay not long ago
-
:hysterical: ya not wrong, but lesson learnt and I have had photo documentation of those lovely little numbers :003:
-
good for you
-
well just finished the steering and it works, does both left AND right :003:
monday its a call to lighthouse to see if a new clutch is viable this week or if i will have to wait till more cash comes in
-
UPDATE
just tried to go out and test steering and get something to drink, got 1/4 mile down the road and all of a sudden its 40% drive 60% slip, so limped home and thats where it stays now till i get a new clutch. :010:
-
seen a few on ebay but not sure of the quality.
-
when i did the clutch on tonka 18 months ago Lighthouse worked out cheaper than the bay when you took into account the extras like rubber boots, bearings and postage, plus i know with lighthouse i will get the right part first time
-
moneys bit tight so going to take a gamble, have ordered just a friction plate for before 12oc delivery tomorrow, yella is in the workshop warming up ready for tomorrow and just hoping the bearing and pressure plate are OK. not sure i like the idea of not changing everything but just can't get the money in time to have a chance of making the Turkey Hunt
-
we have cluch :icon_super:
bit of a hic up last night, lost the pivot ball for the fork arm but had a spare bell housing in the shed so managed to rob one, and after a nights sleep managed to get it in without haveing to remove the gearbox again :003:
so back on the road, just need to get some petrol money and we are back on for the Turkey Hunt Blues
-
Nice one matey :icon_winkle:
