Oil Filters

besides the obvious fitment specs, dia of seal, thread and wether its male or female, what else dictates the filters that are suitable.

the reason i ask is i have 3 oil filters that all say are for the 360,
the one on the 256 also fits the 360 a PH25 approx 5" long and 4" dia,
then there is the one that came on the V8 a Mann filter that is about 3" dia and 8" long
and i have a new Masterparts filter at about 3" dia and 4" long.

they obviously have different capacities but could these size difference affect flow rate and filtration performance or should i trust the manufactures application listings?

each manufacturer will have it's own specification and what they think is suitable for the engine. All will do the job adequately. what you have to look at is the std size filter and refer to that. i wouldn't go smaller but all will filter the oil as they should, MANN filters are always on the larger size and are of good quality

bigger in this area will always be better. i dont see you finding a filter so large it would do harm

There is alot of other stuff in oil filters...

Pressure relief valve... they have different pressure settings as well.

Anti Siphon Valve... anti drain valve... stand pipe...

The media (paper) can be treated for different properties, long life, finer filtration....

Worked in filtration for 10 years, TJ filters, British Filters, Wix filters...

Personally for my Jeeps I buy Mopar filters, for the couple extra £/$'s it really isn't worth messing about. M&H, Mahle are excellent aftermarket filters. I have seen and tested a lot of lesser brands that in short where crap and didn't actually filter.... Oil and filter are one of the few things that look after your engine, I wouldn't mess about... also do not over change your filters, they need some muck on them to work properly, when new they are more 'open'... if they filtered perfectly from the start they would block up very quickly.

Also worth noting American made filters have the pressure relief valve at the top of the filter so when it open (cold mornings) the oil doesn't have to pass all the dirty media, possibly picking up crap before by passing the filter cycle....

So in short, stick to the filters that are listed, unless the manufacturer can check every other detail in the filter is the same...

Mann & Hummel are excellent quality, I have visited one of their sites and we even sold some of our filters to them, they checked the samples that we sent properly for performance and durability.

No filter company makes all of their range, they all sell to each other, it's important that they don't buy from a cheap crap source...
