XJ Shock mount

On they way back form work tonight there wa a knocking doung form the drivers rear side. Had a look and the shocker is lose! Where ir fastens onto the body of the car at the top end, well its broken off!
THe shock is fine but it looks like the mount for it has broken off from the body!
It looks like the sort of job that may take more than my 'No More Nails'

DO I have to get a new mounting? How does it fit on?

The top shock mount has a pin though it.  The ends of the pin are flattened and have holes in them.  There are two smallish bolts that bolt into captive nuts in the body.  Either the bolts have come loose (not likely as they're usually seased(SP)) or they've bust, or the shock bush is compleatly fubared.

If all else fails, you can get ya fingers into the frame to put a nut and bolt on. :wink:

You'll need to take a closer look to be sure what's happened

you can knock the captive nuts out and put a nut and bolt through. or you could drill and tap em mate.

we have seen it a couple of times, the drivers side upper shock nut just comes loose for some unkown reason. if you have lost the bits give us a ring im sure we have spares we could send you foc

There is shag all room above to get the bolt in.

Best way is to get some U section steel welded to the underside to replace the bar pins, I did that on one of mine, also managed to drill and tap another one, crap job to do without a lift

Your not gonna believe this!
Just come in form the garage when the put it up on the ramp, asked me to come and take a look at it!
THE SHOCKS MOUNTINGS TURNED OUT TO BE SELF TAPPING SCREWS :shock:

No bolts keeping them attached, just self tappers! And then the garage said they would have to cut the whole section out each side and weld a new section in. I cant help thing thats just bollocks!

it might have self tapprs in it as the result of someones bad workmanship i fitting the lift. dont let the garage fleese you mate. get under and knock out the captives and put a nut in their place. or drill and tap em itaint that bad to do. we did it on jonah,s lift when one of the bolts broke.

It's not that big a deal.

If the original holes are there, drill and re-tap with an appropriate size (8mm should do it). Then reattach with original bar pins if okay, or replace bar pins and reattach.

I think I may have at least one Old Man Emu bar-pin (somewhere in shed?!) that could be used if you need it.

Don't let a garage start cutting bits out and welding new sections in, I can't believe it's that bad - you don't damage vehicles intentionally do you?  :wink:
