Alternator swappery possibilities
« on: December 16, 2012, 06:39:48 PM »

4.0 litre alternator is a 90 amp job....

V8 GC is a 135 amp job

V8 98 5.9 GC is a 150 Amp job

All these details and the fact that they will swap to a YJ is from US sites

Any other options.......... Like a VM diesel alternator that will drop in a YJ for not much wedge paid to the dismantlers??

It depends on how your original alternator is positioned on your engine to how easy the swap is, I wouldnt fit a diesel alternator unless you can verify that its maximum rpm threshold wont be reached, if it is over revved then it will fail, I swapped out my xj alternator for a zj one earlier this year and although it fitted into the space, the bottom bracket which is cast had to be thrown and a new one fabricated as the physical size between the two is quite significant, it is a very tight fit but it does work and gives me extra amps for winching, got a pic somewhere ...

or indeed a few haha but if your alt is positioned elsewhere perhaps like a zj one then it will be really simple.

the vm or any with a pump are no good in a petrol as they need a oil feed and will seize without it

make sure you fit a voltage reg as well as gc's don't have them on the alternator.

I upgraded the alternator on my XJ to the 136 Amp version all you need to do is a 1 to the last number for the 136 Amp version

I.E  OEM XJ version Denso 5600 5685 which a 90 Amp alternator
                             Denso 5600 5686 which a 136 Amp alternator

It's a direct swap and the electrical connectors are the same
