Driver door hinges 1995 XJ
« on: May 06, 2016, 08:42:25 AM »

I don't know if anyone has seen this before and can help me but here goes. The Drivers door hinge bolts on my jeep, seems to be hitting the A post. It is happening on both the top and bottom hinges. And exactly the same bolt head on each one. Also the gaps when the door is closed, are large at the B post but small between wing and edge of door. I have checked the passenger door which has no problems, for reference. I know I can shim the door to adjust gaps, but don't know how to sort the bolts hitting the frame. The hinge welds are original on drivers door and I cannot see any weld breaks (had it on passengers side, so know what to look for). It has not been in any accidents so no damage. All suggestions greatfully received.

I have attached some pictures for reference

When i first saw your post, i immediately thought the welds had broken :D

However, reading through and looking at the pictures i think i know the answer - i might be wrong but it's worth a try.

If you remove the footwell/kickpanel trim (one screw if memory serves) and get your head in with the pedals, you should be able to see the bolts that secure the hinges to the A-post, unless the hinges are completely welded - as far as i can see on mine (guess why i was looking!) the hinges bolt onto a reinforced section welded to the A-post. If you can see them, you should be able to alter their position with the help of an assistant to lift/move the door in the right direction.
That said, it might pay to sort out the shims etc first as it looks like the bolts/nuts that hold the door to the hinge have come loose and the shims are lost or lurking somewhere. This means the bolts have moved and have jammed in their holes and are now touching the hinges.

I haven't actually had this problem on mine so it's guesswork i'm afraid but the welds have gone weak on my A-posts, not helped a few months back when a gust of wind during Storm Barney nearly took the door off, damaging the leading edge of the door and trailing edge of the wing. This is why i was looking at mine but in all honesty i didn't look that closely behind the kickpanel so might be wrong on what i've suggested - apologies if so!
Definitely worth looking inside the door at the nuts/bolts that hold the door to the hinge though! :D

Thank you for the reply and suggestions.  I will give them a look, hopefully as you say it is something simple.

Front back adjustment is by altering shim depth between door and hinge...
