brake issues
« on: October 07, 2008, 08:14:42 PM »

starting to lose brake effort on the xj. the meaning of losing the brake effort is that the brakes work fine with no fluid loss. the brake pedal has effort but when pressed and held i.e sitting at traffic lights the brakes slowly release unless the pedal is slowly pushed further down. when the pedal if fully pressed so it is acting solely on the master cyclinder the brakes work fine and no pressure is lost and stopps the jeep relatively quickly

i have checked the manifold to brake boost servo pipe and that keeps a vacuum (will still replace it for a new pipe), i have a spare master cylinder that i might fit but unsure as to where the air leak is. i feel i might need an good replacement brake booster unit. i've heard the grand unit works and might be slightly better.

also anyone got a diagram for the brake pipes when the abs unit is removed, mine isn't working so i see no point in having it (try stopping in snow with abs)

am i looking in the right place for the air leak ?

Yup, new or recon master cylinder needed - trouble is, the increased efficiency may soon start leaks further down stream, just watch your wheel cylinders for signs of weeping for a while.

Dont bother wasting time just doing the seals in the master cyl. as the bore tends to be pitted and will tear your new rubbers to shreds.

Master cylinder if you have no visible leaks.
