2000\2001 distributor-less 4.0 cracked head.
« on: October 31, 2009, 11:29:32 AM »

Folks

The yanks get pretty excited about this issue.

Casting # 0331 is the apparently the culprit as the head was refined to increase power and reduce emissions, but is weaker between cylinders 3 and 4 and can crack.

Does anyone know about this happening in the UK with the Austrian-built units?  I was going to look at a 60th anniversary 2001 XJ with 60K on it, today but am slightly tentative now....

Thanks.

Well, I went to see it.

Not a drop of coolant in the bottle, cracked exhaust manifold and much oil sweating between the head and block.  I walked away...

These cars look great on photos, until you get there in person :)

No such thing as an Austrian built XJ, they came from Toledo like all proper Jeeps do.

And, yes they crack heads just the same over here.

I know the feeling, went and looked at 4 before I found one worth buying! If it was done on pictures alone i'd probably have bought the first one I saw!  :jpshakehead: always go have a look an a little test drive, I found one that looked perfect, had full service history, low miles for an 11 year old car, everything looked good until it was driven and found out it had some pretty major steering issues! If your at all unsure of what to look for I posted a thread up back in the summer asking for help on what to watch out for and got some good advice back which stopped me buying a munter!
