Too big or at a squeeze
« on: June 06, 2011, 07:36:34 PM »

Ok I have messed up buying some 16" rims, who would think Jeep would use 2 stud patterns on a WJ?? wtf and why.

Anyway I am after a nice set of 17" all terrains and was looking at a set of BF Goodrich A/T 245/75/R17's. I have looked on the tyre calculator and these come out at 31.468", I have a basic 2" lift do ya reckon they will fit???

They don't.....what you have bought are Grand Cherokee ZJ wheels.

Grand Cherokee WJ's from 1999 - 2005 may have had different looking wheels through the years but they're all the same.

Both Grand Cherokees Yes........same car NO

I have seen a few ideas, my issue is I cannot go too far as I use this jeep for work, I am a railway signalling tester and spend much of my time at access roads either unmade or made from railway ballast, before this I would have had to drive on the motorway a couple of hundred miles. So an all terrain tyre is about my limit

I was intending to do a little green laneing too and I live in the middle of nowhere, do not intend to be housebound like I was in the snow this year, I didn't have the jeep then but is the best 4x4 I have owned and would like to give here the best chance on and off road

Well if you put it that way stick a couple of quality AT's on.

IMHO The WJ is good enough by itself to cope with what your planning to do.

Go to www.wjjeeps.com and search for wheels and they have pictures of all the different OEM wheels.

Went on the North American Grand Cherokee Association Website  www.nagca.com

Searching for information on WJ with 2"BB and 17"  a member posts that on 17" rims a 265/65/17 will fit and a 265/70/17 will fit with rubbing.

Remember that 17" rims are 7.5 inches wide and 16" rims are only 7 inches wide.
If you had a bigger lift you might want the 17" rims which would allow a wider and taller tyre than the 16" rims would allow.

A 265/70/17 computes at 31.6inches with a bit of rubbing .

It all comes down to my bugbear; how high your lift is over stock height..
I reckon that with 2" puck on old tired springs you are good for 30.5inches    ie 245/75R16
My personal theory is that if you had replacement springs 2" over you would be good for a genuine 31 inches and possibly 31.5"
i would love to be able to prove this. Buy 2" springs, 2 inch over shocks and a set of front and rear bump stop extensions. Then put a set of 31.5 inch tyres on; but I've already gone past that.
