Clank & Clunk
« on: November 21, 2011, 06:19:56 PM »

Ok, I give up!

I have a heavy clanking sound from back, near side I think when hitting a speed bump or other similar size bump. It is worse when the car is carrying some weight
I've been all over the underneath and can find nothing.
Recently it was MOT'd no suspension faults found, last week it went in to auto box specialist who sorted a solenoid, he heard the noise and went over every piece of suspension with a long prise bar and found nothing.
I've just spent today looking again, found rear bumper was a little loose, where the bracket bolts to tow bar inside the rail, replaced bolts and its all tight again. That has got rid of one noise but the bigger noise is still there. Only thing i can think of is shock absorber, had a look, a push and a pull seems ok, old but nothing moving.
Could a shagged shock cause such a noise? Any other suggestions? Exhaust is new and not fouling anything, spare is tight. Really sounds like a flat piece of heavy metal slapping against another.
I know diagnosing noises is nearly impossible on line but apart from replacing shocks I am out of ideas!

Sometimes its just good to vent

shocks have been known to fail internally, when i got the wj I had an annoying knock that kinda sounded like the rear seat was locked into position , what it turned out to be was a buggered upper shock bush.

My Jeep made similar noises after a trip to Ukraine on some pretty dismal roads..

Turned out to be a leaf spring that had broken , but it was pretty easy to spot....

Have you  got a mate with a Jeep who can swap your shocks with...just to eliminate that possibility....?

Sadly no Jeep owning friends, well apart from you lot! Nice idea though
Just the one 4x4 owning friend but he drives a Disco.

My plan is to give it a little lift so I'm thinking maybe I bite the bullet and buy the lift and shocks now, see what happens but the worry is that wont solve it, and ill just have a slightly higher Jeep with the same noises but with the added issue of angles to think about as well!
I'll keep looking for answers, and think positive! Googling it has been hopeless so far.
Cheers

Its not something daft...like a forgotton spanner under the rear seat is it....?

I don,t profess to be a Jeep mechanic , or even a car mechanic , bikes are my thing ...but lets try to be logical...

As far as i can see there are only two possibilities...

1... something that should not move..is moving , come loose...

2...something that should move is moving more than it should due to be worn out , or loose...

Bear in mind , that the force that moves this part when a heavy Jeep goes over a bump may be more than you can apply by hand or with a metal bar...

Also...you may be certain you know what area the noise is coming from , but it may be its coming from another place...

If all the steering bits , drive shafts and prop shafts are ok , then you may have to face the possibility you have a Jeep with a Poltergeist..!

Had something similar on my ZJ. Turned out to be a broken Cat. The ceramics do rattle and bang around a lot but still manage to pass emission tests :13:
