Urgent quick fix for Grand Cherokee
« on: December 03, 2012, 02:16:53 PM »

now the water pump is fixed it seems the TPS is done in. I have one ordered to get here tomorrow but really need the car tonight for a short trip.

I have changed the air filter and run a load of carb leaner through the throttle body as advised on the net and while when working it revs a lot better it still has this issue of what feels like a drastic rev limiter kicking in. I also took off the TPS to check for  any obvious damage (none found) and now the engine check light is on (tried the battery off and on again)

can I run the car without the TPS? and will that help or just do damage? also how do I reset the check engine light or will it reset itself when new TPS is fitted?

I so wish the CJ had T&T :banghead:

The PCM uses the TPS feedback to help work out the %age load on the engine. It's quite important as it has an influence on fueling and timing, the system should go to limp mode which is why it has a severe rev restriction, if it's an auto, it may lock that into a mid range gear as well.

If it was mine and desperate I'd use it to drive 5 to 10 miles, it's unlikely to cause damage due to the limp mode and other sensors giving info but it's your truck, your risk and your cash.

Carb cleaner? I can't think of what influence that would have on an external, sealed sensor unless your throttle was sticking open, which is not a TPS fault.

The MIL should turn off after a few trips if the fault is rectified, the code will remain in the PCM for longer.

Take a look at my post yesterday on 'Reset TCM', it has some relevance to this.

the pimpmobile made its trip last night with just one stop to let it reset and got the call this morning that the replacement TPS was in (at the wrong brach so had to drive across Bristol) borrowed a mate car to go get it, get home and fit it to the throttle body go to plug it in and the plug socket is wrong :banghead:

the upshot is my nice £43 pattern part now has to go back and its Lightys to the rescue again, they had a genuine part that is being overnighted for early delivery so at least I can get it fitted in the morning and get to work, and they were £50 cheaper than the stealers but with delivery still cost £105.

just oil change left on my winter service list
