Rear Axle Noise
« on: April 13, 2006, 10:01:36 AM »

I drove down the motorway this morning. Pulled off at my exit, stopped at the roundabout as normal but when I went to pull away there was a "clanking" noise which seemed to be coming from the rear axle. It stopped after travelling approximately 20 feet and did not seem to occur again.

I have a 98 Grand Cherokee. Am I right in thinking it has an LSD in the rear axle and it could be this causing the noise? Does this mean I have serious diff problems?

Or your carrier could be worn. (Greggmo's YJ used to do it)

Change the oil first (add friction modifier for the lsd)
If it comes back quickly either the clutch packs in the diff or worn out the whole diff assembly needs replacing.

Thanks Guys.

I'll be down the local dealers on Saturday morning for a bottle of oil and friction modifier and see how it goes.
