Number plate location
« on: June 07, 2016, 07:20:41 AM »

Just fitted a Smittlbilt SRC bumper, was thinking about a stick on number plate to go on bonnet, are they legal?
Not that I think it will cause much of a problem, just wondered?

I think it would depend on the age of the vehicle. After 2000/2001 when they changed plate regs there has to be the BS mark which I don't think you'd get on any stick on plate. You also need makers post code too on plates since then.

Had my front plate here for 4 years. :D

It was fine for MOT, (it was a mate done all my tests) and been talking to plod beside it plenty of times and they said nuthin about it. This was from a 'normal' view of the plate ! NO fuckin clue how I got away with it. lol

I made some brackets and mounted my number plate just above the bumper in front of the winch so it is safe and not in the way of anything. The Jeep attracts enough attention and I don't need to give them a simple items to pull me on.

That isn't acceptable.

MoT manual section 6.3. Reasons for rejection 2.c
A registration plate not fixed vertically, or as close to vertical as is reasonably practical.

The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001
The British Standard sets out the physical characteristics of the number plate. This includes visibility, strength and
reflectivity. The British Standard also requires each number plate to be permanently and legibly marked with the
following information:-
1. The British Standard number (currently BS AU 145d)
2. The name, trade mark or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier
3. Name and postcode of the supplying outlet

^^^ yeah, can't argue with a word of that. :D Apart from, there was PERFECTLY clear view of the plate for overhead speed cameras ! lol
It was made up by a legit plate supplier, and with all the proper BS materials. But that was it :) I knew right from the off it was askin for plod attention, the plan bein, leave it until I got pulled, then sort it. Like I said Mike, NO CLUE how I got away with it ! Plod in N Ireland would have been over it like a rash in the first week, never mind 4 years. :D

Mine is stuck to the bonnet, been that way on several 4x4s and never had a problem with the law but recently had massive problems in carparks... They all use numberplate recognition and almost always at the front of the car too low to see my bonnet!

Having to constantly press the help button and argue with the attendant that I had paid got irritating so I made a bracket that slots into the winch fairlead with pins to hold it and gives enough space for the cable too. Leave that in day to day and one on the bonnet for offroading, viola!

Aaaahhh, good old numberplate recognition...I remember that!

You'd love it over here...copper on the side of the road with a pair of binoculars and a mobile phone. He sees something which catches his eye, calls base, gets put on hold, then diverted to our version of DVLA...they've all gone home for the day, so copper gives up and has another beer!!

Sad, but true.

Sounds ideal Baz, leaves everyone to get on with their lives (and probably lots of dodgy illegal stuff too  :icon_eek:)

That's the way I see it James...copper can't pull you over just for a documents check...he has to see something which seems suspicious....17 people in a BMW 318i, being driven by a young white boy (everyone else has dark brown skin and wearing head covering). Coppers here drive old Opel Astra or Vectra type cars and will NEVER engage in a pursuit, unless it involves a HGV or donkey cart...they just get on the mobile phone!!

Illegal immigrants are the flavour of the month, at the moment.

I thought the doors for incoming foreign people's had been firmly shut.....in your part of the world....?

Hence the rubber boats heading to Sicily at the moment........

On a personal note ....I was meant to be heading your way this year, Balkans bound but the BIL got paranoid it wasn't safe........so we parted ways.....

He decided to ride down Italy and round Sicily....... Which as we now know has 2000 people a week trying to land .....dead or alive in guess where .....? Sicily.......

Happy days...... Off to Spain and Portugal on Sunday......
