Getting kinda worried
« on: June 11, 2009, 12:19:54 PM »

I have been reading about over heating and coolant loss on here and i'm getting kinda worried.

My (53) KJ CRD has only got 66k on the clock, had the 60k service months ago, timing belt change, had stealership do it cause any probs and they would have to fix it, but i degress, lately the coolant now needs to be topped up regularly, which i never ever had to do till now, now it has never been overheated, thrashed or abused, had the local garage do a couple of tests on the coolant system, pressure test, no drop in pressure with the engine hot or cold, he even done a test to see if fumes or traces of engine emissions were getting into the header tank, i read that as a test for head or head gasket failure, this is a VM engine i believe, so is there any known problems with it (£££££££££'s)?

Now as an ex spanner i can do some things, but a lot of technical bits and pieces have been put into these engines which is beyond my expertise, i know how a head will warp with overheating and failure of gaskets, would the stealership have had to touch the head gaskets at all, which there could be some redress if they have fooked up, or could it be them flamming spring clips that holds the hose's on, what's wrong with the Jubilee clip?, we can't even see any leaks from them tho'.

I have bought some K-Seal, not cheap, and so far the leak has stopped.

What's the thoughts from the forum, cheapest option please, i do not really want to part with it.

i've recently replaced the timing belt on my 2.5 CRD, myself, and didn't have to remove any coolant system related parts to do the job?
but looking at the manual it says the EGR cooler pipes are to be removed to insert the left upper timing pin?
(er... i skiped that bit 8-)

Don't you just love stealerships, you take in a perfectly good functioning truck and they return a noisy, leaking jeep that only visually resembles what you left them with the week before. And you get to pay for the privilege too!!!

No real problems to report on the CRD motor.

Cheers for that, can sleep at night now.

Still just got to do nearside front brake calipers, already done the rear ones. Stealers were the cheepest, took Mansfield a week to send me the pads #-o

jubilees clips normally work well but aren't the best out there as there are alot of cheap makes which are basically cr@p. The problem with jubilee clips is that they don't clamp all the way round the pipe which if the pipe isn't seated problem can lead to leaks. the other problem is that they dont deal with heat expansion. if the clip is over tight and the pipe expands more than it should due to the heat then there is a possibility of the hose clip failing or the pipe failing, the latter is less likely. the reason for the use of spring clips is to give a uniform clamping pressure around the hose and when the pipe expands due to heat the clamping pressure remains uniform. over a period of years the spring tension does drop slightly. if you get paranoid about hose clips then buy a set of super clips, these clips are tightened by a bolt rather than a worm gear which can strip. the super clip due to the bolt tightening gives a better and wider loading surface and hence a better seal.

failure of head gaskets and the topic is normally aimed at the vm engine which is fitted to the mk1 and mk2 cherokee. the crd engine is a merc build so not realy relevant

The CRD in the Cherokee/Liberty KJ is a VM, albeit a common rail one.

Well the old girl is still leaking coolant,
K-Seal is good then :011:, couple of mates in the trade tells me to keep going till the engine blows up :005:, that'll be the head gasket, but she never misses a beat, i did do the old code thing with the speedo, P1130, what ever that means, Heated Oxygen Sensor according to the list, downloaded all 37 pages, and i am still no wiser, she is due a service soon and i don't want to use the stealership, have just got back on the property ladder again and the missus is a bit tight wiv me money :icon_biggrin:.

So once again i ask for your thoughts, as it has got me flumuxed.

Could it be a corroded core plug that is weeping? I had one on my 4ltr engine and lived with adding a cup full of water every fortnight for nearly a year before I plucked up the courage to remove the auto gearbox and replace it.

We have had the old girl up on ramps, had a good look for any trace/trail/marker of leak, not a sausage :jpshakehead:, i don't fancy having to rip the gear/transfer box off to check core plugs, wonder if me mate has one of those firbe optic camera things, :hysterical:, nah, this is Norfolk, we don't have modern teknollagee here, cheers for that tho', looks like it'll have to be the stealership, even tho' they have lost the franchise.

Thanks for all your suggestions, now off to grovel in front of bank manager :icon_sad:.
