I have a ’03 Grand Cherokee CRD with 35,000 miles. I have just been to Mashall’s Cambridge Jeep dealership and they gave it a ‘heath check’.

Off the back of this, I have three areas that I would appreciate advice and comment on. I must add by the way that I am new to Jeeps (had the Cherokee two months now) and have some technical knowledge but would stress the some.

1.According to the health check the ‘N/S/R half shaft leaking badly’. The dealer is getting a quote together but has suggested £500 ish. I have just also spoken to a local independent that deals with American kit and when I quoted the problem suggested that I would need a new bearing and seal and a couple of hours labour and £150 should sort it. Is this a common problem as is £150 too good to be true?

2.The dealer also pointed out that the central locking receiver in the passanger door is not working properly, the fobs lock the car but not unlock it. Is this something I could do myself with a half decent tool kit or is it a bitch for DIY?

3.The rear tyres have 3mm depth, the fronts have 6mm, would I be a fool to them swap over or should I just get ready to buy some new rears?

It should take 1-2 hours to do a rear halfshaft seal, The bearing has to come off to replace the seal, and the bearing is retained by a steel ring which is pressed onto the shaft, as is the bearing, hence the need to replace the ring and bearing when changing the seal. The parts should be about £75 plus the labour.

You won't be able to change the passanger door module yourself as the system has to be programmed to accept your remotes with the dealer's diagnostic computer once installed.

The tyres should be swapped front to rear to even up wear at every service. Run them till they all need replacing then fit 4 new ones to minimise transmission wear.
