Power Steering Fluid Grand V8
« on: June 15, 2009, 05:34:48 PM »

Hi
I am still trying to locate the pipes to replace my leak, but I understand we must use Mopar power steering
fluid!. As I am in the UK and the nearest Jeep dealer is around 40 miles away, can any other fluid be used
instead.
Thanks

Not if you don't want to risk damaging it. http://www.wjjeeps.com/service/maintenance_wj.htm#OTHER

I thought that the issue was that you shouldn't use ATF, whilst power steering fluid as in that which halfords and motor factors sell is fine. As long as it doesn't have AFT & Power steering on the lable, and has just Power steering then it's OK.

I don't belive for one second that jeep use a unique oil.

FYI I use 'power steering' fluid and it's not caused any problems.

I'm with dxmedia on this one. As long as it is fluid for power steering only you'll be fine.

Let it settle and try again, the fluid will be full of tiny bubbles, which will cause a lot of noise.

Hi all,
I read this with interest as I have the dreaded leaky pipes on my 2001 wj 4.7 and am having no luck in sourcing the correct replacements.
Can anybody point me to a reliable supplier that will not hold me to ransom as Jeep try to do!
Sorry to hijack the post but I am getting desparate!
I have described my problem in my first post in .... Introductions/We bought it by mistake!! Honestly
Any help will be very welcome
Cheers

Here is the parts list of 2001 WJ steering hoses. Be warned though, it's for US vehicles, and unfortunately steering is one thing that differs with a RHD.
It may be appropriate if your steering box is on the same side as this diagram (i.e. UK nearside). I don't have a WJ any more so can't remember.

Call Lighthouse Jeep in Diss. They will tell you the right part and ship it quickly for a decent price. 01953 681237. Their phone manner sucks, but they know their stuff.

Thanks for your very swift reply however I think as you hinted the diagram is not applicable to a 2001 UK 4.7 WJ.
As far as I can see my pressure hose runs by a tortuous route from the pump on the near side along in front of the rad, behind the grille and down to the box on the off side but without taking off the one piece grille and bumper front panel it is not easy to see exactly. The diagram you enclosed shows return hoses only and makes ref to the pressure hose and the hydraulic fan which is post 2002 on UK WJs so I am still unsure. I have downloaded a w/shop manual and the parts list  but there are discrepancies and all the Jeep people so far have given conflicting info! I presume the return which is not under the same pressure will route via a cooler in the rad although I cannot see without doing the dismantling.
I will give Lighthouse a call as you suggest and keep the fingers crossed that they are indeed the gurus!
Most websites I have found for WJs seem to regard the power steering hoses as one of the standard failures on them so many people must have sorted out the maze of info and got the job done. The American sites say that the hose is an OEM item but I had hoped that they were being custom made across here for less than Jeeps £165
Any more info will be gratefully received
meanwhile ... Thanks again!
