Cherokee Extreme Sport Towing
« on: June 18, 2009, 09:31:35 AM »

Hi anyone having problems towing long trailers? While towing my twin axle car trailer I find that when going over 50 mph it starts snaking, while when towing a short trailer I have no hassle.
Any ideas

Sounds like your noseweight is wrong.

out dragged a boy racer whilst towing a caravan, is that extreme ?

have you fitted a stabiliser ?. Normally if you havent got enough weight onver the tow hitch then the trailor will start to snake. put the jockey wheel on some scales (not connected to the jeep) to get the nose weight

um  :icon_redface:

that's with the tow ball being 6 1/2 inches higher than it should have been, forgot to put a dropper plate on. Tracked true though.

showed that pic of the mog on the trailer to a mate of mine, he said it would be interesting to get that on a weigh bridge, and check the drivers licence,(ex copper) if it was more than 3500kg (total weight) he could be breaking the law and liable to  a ban/points and hefty fine. he was muttereing something about  there being a MAM weight of 3.5 tonnes for drivers towing a trailer with a normal car licence  taken before january 1997, after that you need a hgv
he quoted this bit of info:

There are two factors that restrict your towing weight.

1.The vehicle manufacturers specify a towing limit for the vehicle which you may not exceed (for example 1800kg).

2.The vehicle manufacturers also specify the maximum gross train weight of the vehicle again which may not be exceeded (for example 3600kg).

Therefore, using the examples above, so long as your car and trailer, in total, weighs less than 3600kg, of which, no more than 1800kg is the trailer then with a licence first issued before 1st January, 1997 or if you have passed a supplementary towing test, then you can legitimately drive the combination at 60mph on the motorway.

For someone whose licence was first awarded after 01/01/97 the regulations are different in that they are not allowed to tow a vehicle that weighs more than the kerbweight of their car without taking a further test.

not sure  if he was anywhere near right cos he had been drinking a bit, but it did get my attention.

Not quite right. If your licence says B+E, then there are no ratio limits enforced on the licence, so long as the trailer is below
the maximum allowable weight.

If you just have B on your licence (post 1997) then the gross train weight must be less than 3500kg, and the trailer must weigh less than the vehicle, and the trailer must be less than the vehicle's maximum towing weight.

the more he told me the more I got confused tim to be honest and I hold a HGV1, but I have just looked at my licence and it does state that to drive a vehicle with a MAM over 3500kg you need to hold a C1+E or C1 entitlement, depending on trailer weights etc thats why I think he would said it would need to take a look at the licence of the driver. And I know from dealing with dvla you have to look at all catergories as some seem to eliminate others.( and we all know dvla never lose licence entitlements)

Ah the copper who doesn't know what he's talking about, now there's a supprise.

I've grandfather rights on my licence so it's a c1+e entitlement iirc, either way it's a mam of 8.25 tonne (7.5 with a 750 trailer, or combination of weights upto that according to a lengthy conversation with vosa a few years ago when I had a 8 tonne truck and they confirmed that my licence was OK for driving it)

The mog weights in at 2600, the trailer 800, the gross tow weight is 3500 for a grand. That's 100kg's under, which doesn't take into concideration that the mog troop carrier body is not there, but there is a smaller tipper body, and that it's been diesalised, all in all, it's no more than 3500.

That's a legal load with the old school licence. 100% capacity, but legal.

People try to make the whole towing thing more confusing that it is. If you've an old school licence, look at the maximum tow limit of the vehicle. Look at your licence entitlement, if it's OK then all is fine.

Oh, if the mog was doing the towing, then according to my licence that's a max of 22 tonne trailer (more than the mog can tow according to the plating - but then again mogs are used for shunting 600 tonne trains ;) )

I think in the end its everybody's interpretation of the rules! ,I got grandfather rights on my licence ( mind you dvla did lose them for 4 weeks) aswell but then I progressed to class 1 so I have never really worried about what weights I can tow! ( mind you bubba and lard in a trailer, I reckon I could be in trouble).
I think as times go on with new police coming thru, they won't have a clue about what's going on with licences so I can see 'em pulling more people up and wasting their time.

Should say, the 2.6 and 2.9 discrepancy is the difference between the 404.1 and the 404.0 respectivly. The .1 is the millitary spec lower powered one with the canvas roof, whilst the .0 is a higher powered steel roof version, hence the 300kg's difference.

I'll stop before I get my mog cap on and drivel german for too long ;)

Theyre cheaper than you think (looking at the motors on your sig.)  Or you know the price they actually make ;)

I don't understand why people try and make the ultimate offroader by pouring £££££ into a truck, when you can just buy a mog and it will still be better.

C1+E....vehicles with a weight between 3500 and 7500kg and with a trailor over 750kg but the total combined weight cant exceed 12000kg.

According to a conversation with vosa 5 or 6 years ago, that's changed, it's now 8.25. 7.5 + .75  All depends on the guy at vosa know what he was talking about though.
