Hi all,

Recently bought my YJ as a running project, have put it through the MOT, taxed, etc and its running reasonably well now except for a stalling issue.

Its a 4.2 automatic and will idle without a problem in both Park and Neutral, however once I select either Drive or Reverse the revs drop and it will cut out or splutter.  It is drivable if I brake with the left and keep the revs up with the right, but annoying. 

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

mmmm, where to start  this is very common on 4.2 esp with the auto box . check all the vacuum hoses and there are MANY , but i suspect its the stepper motor , which is attatched to the back of the carb , be wary of stripping the carb , its a nightmare bit of rubbish , controlled by its ecu 
  If your gonna keep it , go for a weber and ditch the lot , far better mpg , and more power .
  Sorry to be a bit negative ,but  this set up was crap new , and now being 20 years old is never gonna run right , if you had an mot recently , any idea what the co was , that might give you a pointer .

Thanks, points me in the right direction at least.

Thought it might be carb related.  Not too handy myself but willing to have a go so will poke around with the hoses and see what I can see.  Wouldn't be surprised to see some cracks, etc based on the jeep as a whole.

Almost certainly carb trouble.

as jim says the webber is a very good relacement

but could it be as that the tickover is to low anyway hence the stalling try tweaking it slightly

The Weber sounds like the best option.

How fool proof is it to install?  Do I need a specialised mechanic or could I have a go myself?

Read elsewhere on the forum that it will run reasonably well out of the box but the benefits are really derived when tuned.

There are also 2 versions available the standard Twin choke which I think is 32/36 ie at lower throttle 1 choke, the smaller, is open and then when you mash the skinny pedal the other larger choke opens as well.
Then there is the 36/36 which .... well just gives you more!!!!  Now I wonder which one I would go for??

Yep its an easy job to do your self , sure Webcom will have the kit listed on there web site still , cant believe they are a fast mover anymore .
  It comes as a complete ready to run kit including all the adaptors to fit it . Last time i bought one it was about £235

try the nutter bypass? its used a lot in the states and they seem to get on well with it ( incidently I know where you are coming from cos our 87 was similar, I am going to swap in a 4.0 ho tho to sort my prob)
