Jeep Cherokee 2.8CRD alternator
« on: July 24, 2009, 08:25:24 PM »

Hello, once again, well I had the 60k service and cambelt change done at Ridgeway Jeep dealership in Portsmouth for £591 so not bad considering what was done however they highlighted 2 problems.

The main problem being the alternator clutch is rattling and a quoted price of £1.169.91 to supply and fit inc vat. Where the hell can I get a re manufactured alternator and clutch from thats not going to break the bank? the 2nd problem is the auxiliary belt tensioner is noisy for which they can fix for £200 notes. Any pointers gratefully recieved

Thaks

I spoke to Mark at MDG regarding my 60k service and cambelt change and he told me the Jeep Ridgeway price was one that he couldn't better, nice guy and honest , so I'll give him a ring and see what he can recommend.

Ingore this advice, it's a totally different engine, didn't realise at the time that your is a 2.8KJ and not a 2.7WJ

Sorry, I should have been more explicit, yes it's the alternator and clutch that produces the rattling sound........at the moment its all working but just very noisy rattling sound comes from it

Are you sure they don't mean the clutch in the alternator pulley? this is a freewheeling clutch a bit like a ratchet which allows the alternator to freewheel in one direction reducing vibration through the belt. If this is siezed it will make the belt tensioner vibrate like buggery. The pulley assembly is available as a seperate item.

I'm just reading the maintenance report and all it says is and I quote "alternator clutch rattling, requires new alternator or " and also "auxiliary belt tensioner noisy 0.8" but I think what you have said sounds more like the problem I've got with jeep

In the '05 parts catalogue the alternator pulley is listed as a replacement part so should be available. It is part #53013 554AD. Phone a dealer and get a price for this part.
