Anti Roll Bar Blues 1975 Mitsi J26 - Help reqd
« on: August 10, 2009, 04:41:38 PM »

My truck failed the MOT on
Rear number plate light - easy fix.
Exhaust blowing - bit of welding on of pipework

But the real problem is the anti roll bar (torsion type).
See attached from manual.

As my J26 is so rare (2 in UK, 1 in USA and approx 20 in Japan) has anyone any suggestions
as to how I can fix this please?

PS Suggestion regarding indicator lights from motorbike did the trick - they passed without a mention.

What exactly is the problem with the anti-roll bar?

two things spring to mind
remove the anti rollbar altogether and go for a fresh mot somwhere else [cant fail whats not there and you wont notice it uless you are used to loading it to the gunnals the leaf springs do all the axel location so thers no dangers of anything coming adrift

if the rubbers have worn away the anti rollbar you can use black tape to build it up to reduce the slack refit the rubbers and trim carefully the exess tape it will do for the test but is certanly not a long term test but it works i know it does

if your are short of replace ment rubbers then its a case of comparing other trucks with the same diameter roll bar and ordering them its a very common design and found on most things with rear leafs

but as tim says any info you can add would help

Tim & Bubba,

Thank you both for such a quick reply.
I'll get back to you both ASAP with reason for failure but thanks for the ideas so far.
As I now use my Jeep to carry around equipment for my gardening business I guess, as you say, it's probably a good
idea to get this fixed rather than just do a "running repair".

I thought that till I came across an otherwise stock TJ with the front one missing. I checked the manual before advising, only to find that the tester's manual clearly states that an anti rollbar missing from an axle which has one fitted as standard is a clear cut FAIL. I had no choice than to fail it.

i agree 100% mike its a hoodwink for sure but the j28 is so old and obscure i defy any tester to know the standard build of such a beast

you couldnt do it on anything newish tj yj xj or such but you can and will pull off one or two things with older odd stuff the tester has to go with the best info he has to hand at the time of test you know jeeps inside out so you woul know in an instant if somthing was a miss

Nosebolt, Mike, Bubba,

Nosebolt,
Firstly thank you for the offer of the bushes - I'll check sizes (and "if" they are the problem) and get back to you.

Mike & Bubba,
As Bubba says there are No manuals available manufacturer or otherwise on any of he J20 series other than in Japanese from a historical book seller in japan - I've spent the best part of 8 months searching.
But if I can get this problem fixed I'd rather do that.
My other thought is fitting an OEM kit or adapting a set from another (possibly Jap) vehicle such as the Mk 1 Shogun - do you blokes think either of those is a sensible option?

Personally I'd take it off and make sure all traces of it are erased with dirt or a nice fresh coat of Waxoyl over a wide area. Nice clean patches where the mountings were are a dead giveaway.

Mike,
The problem is a worn bush where a pin joins item 1 to item 7.

Nosebolt,
So thanks for the kind offer of the D bushes but the ones on mine have passed and are not the same size.

Bubba,
I've been to the garage this morning with a selection of options for them
and suddenly the number plate light wasn't an issue it just needed tightening more securly on the barcket.
The bush "shouldn't" be a problem and the exhaust can be welded.
I suspect there was a bit of a panic as they know that parts aren't available and needed a bit of time to think of the solutions e.g. I pointed out a rear light from my old BSA A10 would do the job for the numberplate if we needed a replacement and, based on the suggestions here, we could just simply remove the anti roll bar completely. ifg needs be we could also get a complete exhaust system for a Hotchkiss, from Jeeparts in Shrewsbury, if the original was too far gone.

My concern now is that we are in day 2 of my only weeks holiday and the clock is ticking as I need to be back gardening using my Jeep next week -- ahhh a nice stress free break to relax and enjoy the company of the family while helpful mechanics busy themselves fixing things and then getting well paid for a good job done on time with a smile.

I'll keep you posted and thank you all for your advice,

Tim,

What a find!

Although my J26 is earlier than the J50 series this might be very useful.
I'll give it a go.

Cheers,

Tim,

Well that's pretty impressive!!!

Now where's the book which details all current suppliers of parts and the other giving winning lottery numbers for the next 5 years....?

Although the price is in pounds sterling when it comes to ordering a copy the address section only seems to give me states in the US. Can you suggest how do I go about ordering a copy please?

Superb info.
Thank you,

Choose United Kingdom as your country first and the state field will be removed.

Tim,

Many thanks for the information and taking the trouble to guide me through this - it's appreciated.
I've searched for over 2 years to try and find a guide to add to my very basic user manual and this
is just the sort of book I need.

Book on J20s /J26 sucessfully ordered - mines a 4G53 petrol engine and I've got an original manual so that's covered but thanks for the tip.

Just to close this off.

Jeep passed.
Book is on it's way.
I also got a nice 12 month booking for my gardening business on Friday so all's well here in my cabbage patch.

Once again many thanks people (especially Tim).

Bubba,

No  - it's always been green.
There are some J50s around but if you've found another J20 I'd appreciate any contacts you might have.
Apart from Colt/Mitsubishi UK, who are keeping theirs under wraps and only displaying it at trade shows, as far as
I know there were another 7 which Colt imported from Japan in the mid/late 70's. But I've never been able to track down any of the remaining 6.

Incidentally the book arrived - it's a copy of information available free on a Japanese owners web site. The only difference is the book has pictures of the various models on the cover. Useful but not quiet what I was expecting as you'd have to find the parts (and have more money than sense) to build your own and Mitsubishi UK don't recognise any of them.
