xj wheel hub
« on: August 23, 2009, 07:30:51 PM »

Ok a bit of a problem removing the top bolt for the wheel hub. Multispline socket needed but that is no use due to the wear the splines have. A 12mm multi-point socket is no good as it just slips, so any ideas on a way forward in removing the bolt.

A painstaking use of a hacksaw on the bolt head only comes to mind

As Bubba said the bolt head will take a 13mm 12point or a slightly smaller 1/2" 12point if a bit corroded. If you truely have fitted a 12mm socket then the head is toast so you have a couple of options....

*Get to the bolt head with a grinder and remove it.
*Saw off the bolt head (may be possible?).
*Weld another nut onto the bolt head but the weld will have to get a good bite or it will simply snap off.
*If the hub is scrap anyway then cut into the bolt at the hub end while being carefull not to nick the knuckle or cut the tab off the hub then once the hub is off get some mole grips on the bit that is left.

Hope these ideas help.

the head is quite rounded, unfrotunately the hub ins't scrap so i was hoping to remove it for a spare.

no welder and the 13mm multi (not 12mm) just spins. 1/2" slips as well but might try the spanner, so looks like a case of hacksaw use then. Just burnt out the angle grinder

Or can you put a mark on with a code chisel, then turn the bolt?

Or weld another nut to the back of it.

Defo 1/2" 12 point is the right size, sometimes you need to hammer the socket firmly on.

Top tip, copper grease everything and replace caliper bolts for new ones as sometimes they don't like being re used and can snap, only a few pence from a nut and bolt shop.

Hope this helps, Maf
