Light bar for a WJ Grand Cherokee
« on: August 30, 2009, 06:35:23 PM »

Hi all ............... has anyone fitted a light-bar to the roof of their Grand Cherokee ? I currently have a roof-rack fitted which acts as the mount for my lights but I'm considering swapping this for a lower key light bar using some of these modern mini spotlights which seem to be just as powerful as the big stuff. Maybe leds. Also want to get some better illumination for reversing with the light beginning to go - already !!

I'm also considering putting daytime running lights on the front & back - I've seen front ones at Halfords, but can't seem to see any rears. I've noticed that hgvs seem to make extensive use of small led lights - often only one or two bulbs, but they're pretty effective. Does anyone have any ideas about where I could look for lighting or know of a travelling auto-electrician that could help me ?

I've seen, also in Halfords, the roof bars by Thule & also their own brand, but I'm not so sure whether lights would fit to these bars ok.

Is it only me or are there others of you out there that don't have a great deal of patience with stuff like this & prefer to earn the money so I can just pay someone to do the whole job for me & save me all the aggro ? Lol !   :icon_razz:

 It's probably just my age ....................      :icon_rolleyes:

Yes thanks V8   :greggmo:

Thanks for the link BF - I'd been looking for that but it seems they only advertise in Landrover mags!

These seem like good lights BUT .............. always a 'but' isn't there !! Lol ! How would I fit them to my non-roll-bar equipped truck ? Roll-bar tubing's quite thick innit !! I'd been considering using a Thule roofbar & that has a square profile ! Guess I'll have to email the company & ask the question !

Here are the links to stuff I've been looking at so far ...............

I emailed 'em several days ago but no reply to date ..................

@sp - my existing lights are wired with the cable coming from the tailgate top, actually into the nearside roof rail so that the wires are hidden. Think it cost a bit to do tho' as the wires need to go all the way back to the dash for the switch & they need to be hidden ! Apparently mine had alot of the interior removed/lifted in order to hide the wires.

@ BF - I have been looking into mounting the lights underneath the light bar, so they'd be protected off-road, but I think space might be a problem. Thule do a standard height & a low-profile roofbar system. I've seen a couple of trucks in recent mags with light bars & small spots & I'm trying to contact them for info ............. watch this space !! Lol !   :001:

Ahhh - just spotted that the Asimuth's a different version & it can be mounted on any flat surface so it'd prob work on a square-sectioned roof-bar. Out of stock tho' ..............................  :jpshakehead: :001:

Why not drill one of the existing roof bars, i am sure they are strong enough four 10mm holes should be no problem, thats my plan. If you need the bars for say a roofrack just pick a pair up from a brakers.

Yes I'm sure the standard roofbars would drill ok, but the bars on my Surco rack aren't locking bars & I think I'd prefer them to lock on with a couple of hundred £'s of lights on there ............... just to make it less easy to remove !!
