ARB Pumpkin Air Fitting Mod
« on: September 08, 2009, 03:53:52 PM »

some of you may know that at Cheapfest I managed on the first obstacle to rip the airlines out of the rear ARB locker on the back of the TJ.  The standard ARB lines are 5mm and uses compression fittings and a nut to connect to the axles  pumkin.  As I did not have any of this available it meant that I was only able to use the front locker all weekend, Gregmo did point out that it now meant that I would have to learn to drive rather than having an easy life.

On returning home I decided to convert all the lines and fittings to 6mm diameter and push fit connectors as these are more easily repaired in the case of minor hiccups.  The following images and words may be useful if any one else wants to have a fiddle.

The first stage was to remove the nut on top of the ARB axle fitting that was holding the original air line and compression olive as this was all that was left.  Once the nut had been remove the hole through its centre was opened upto 6.2mm diameter.

The next step was to produce a fitting that would go into the existing ARB pumpkin fitting and then allow the connection of the external air line.  The tow images below show the item that I turned ipn the lathe, it is 5mm dia on the side that goes into the axle fitting and 6.1mm on the side projects through the nut, their is also a shoulder 8.2mm in diameter for the nut to seat against.  The oring fits to the 5mm side and when the nut is tightend seals aganst the area that was originally occupied by the compression olive.

Once turned and the oring fitted it was attached back to the axle with the original nut, as shown in the blurred image below (bit tricky focusing under the car)

And the final photo with the push fit and airline hooked up

Good idea and if you break air line again just use a push fit coupler

Looking at the scuffs on the axle something has kicked up and gone over the top taking the line with, probably never happen again but if it does I can now just pushfit a new piece of pipe and at 6mm the fittings are easy to get hold of.

Regarding the push fits, I take it they are plastic. You can get metal versions of them too. I have found from experience that the plastic ones snap very easily and do go brittle also. I used to use a lot of them on pneumatic installations in the water industry.

They are plastic the hope was that if I do snag one it should break the fitting and not the connection into the axle, but if they become a problem I will swap them to metal.
